(3/14) Think about Your Actual Self
His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Please think about your souls. Try to understand what your soul wants, what your soul is meant to do. Try to know who you are first. Before you try to understand the world, try to understand yourselves. This world is very big – so many people go to study at Oxford and Cambridge and earn big-big degrees in an attempt to understand this world, but they do not know who they are. Doctors pride themselves on their ability to treat diseases, but is there any guarantee that they can actually heal or save anybody's life? Can they actually give life to anybody? No doctor will give you such a guarantee, 'Oh, I can save this man', 'I can give life to this person.' In this material world, we are always busy with our own material lives. The Lord has mercifully given us sons, wives, daughters, saying, 'I am giving all this to you. But I may not have given you all this, and even having given it all to you, I can always take it all back.' Some people live happily, but the Lord can take all their happiness within one moment. So, try to think about yourselves – think about the benefit of your souls. This is what we come here for: to inspire you to do this. How is it possible to practise Krishna consciousness in this material world? How is possible to live in the family of Lord Krishna even while still being in this world? Always think about your souls, about how your soul can get benefit. I have told you before that if I take a drop of my blood and compare it to the blood of my parents, it will match. It means that my parents gave birth to me, they are my biological parents. But my parents did not give birth to my soul – my soul comes from the Lord. He gives me this soul, He keeps me alive, He arranges everything for me, but despite all that we forget Him. Nobody in this world thinks about God. Everybody only thinks about their own lives and bodies. This is what is called Maya consciousness (maya-bhajan), or service to Maya, illusory environment. Turning us into her servants, Maya Devi makes us do whatever she pleases. Maya Devi is created by the Lord. Taking her power from the Lord, she turns everybody into her servants and keeps them bound within this world. Sometimes, she gives somebody money; sometimes, she makes somebody very rich; sometimes, she gives somebody happiness; sometimes, she gives somebody sadness and makes them suffer. This is how people live in this material world of maya. But do we ever think about what life is like in the Lord's world? Do we even ever think about it? We take untruth for truth. Untruth means temporary, fleeting things – my house, my room, my son, my relatives. Surrounded by all these things of the 'me' and 'mine' world, we live our whole lives running behind money.
