As yesterday, we have got an opportunity to speak some Hari-katha this noon
too. We spoke some Hari-katha and chanted kirtans yesterday... Please
do not speak.
gramya-katha na sunibe, gramya-varta na kahibe
bhala na khaibe ara bhala na paribe
amani manada hana krsna-nama sada la'be
vraje radha-krsna seva manase karibe
"Do not listen to village talks, do not speak about village news. Do not eat
fancy food, do not wear fancy clothes. Do not expect honour to yourself and
give all respect to others. Always chant the Holy Name of Krishna and serve
Radha-Krishna in your mind."
(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 3.6.236–237)
You waste time on speaking about useless things (gramya-katha) the
whole day...
dinera madhye abala-tabala
kata pachala padite para
tara madhye ki eka-bara
govinda balite nara ?!
"How much nonsense you can talk every day! How many idle talks you have! Can
you not say the Name of Govinda even once?"
(Folklore)
There will be Hari-katha here for one–two hours, and you must listen to it
with your heart. All day long you are busy thinking about your money, food
and clothes. You are always preoccupied with bodily thoughts, but when will
we think about the Lord? He is the one owing to whom we have come to this
world, owing to whom we have got a human birth and from whom we have got
everything in this world (we have got the Lord's light and wind—for example,
if the wind stops, we will have no oxygen and die). What the Lord has given
us is incomparable, but what can we give to the Lord in return? We
cannot give the Lord anything at all, but if we can give our minds and hearts
to the Lord, then we will attain supreme benefit.
We have to leave this world one day.
jivana anitya janaha sara
tahe nana-vidha vipada-bhara
namasraya kari' yatane tumi
thakaha apana kaje
"Know that the main thing is that life is temporary and filled with all sorts
of danger. Carefully take shelter of the Name and do your work."
(Sri Gitavali, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur)
dina yaya michha kaje nisa nidra-base
nahi bhavi marana nikate achhe base
"My days pass in useless work and nights are wasted on sleep. It never occurs
to me that there is death sitting and waiting right next to me."
(Sri Kalyan-Kalpataru, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur)
Nobody can say when we will have to go away from this world. In the meantime,
we have got this short time now—we have got this human birth—once we get some
intelligence, we must immediately start practising Krishna consciousness. We
do not have the fortune to have a chance to hear Hari-katha and kirtan
from saints from an early age, but anyhow, later we did get this opportunity,
and once we hear from them, we should understand what our most important
necessity is.
Why do we need to worship the Lord? Why is it necessary for us? Why must I
serve the Lord? What will happen if I do it? It is necessary for all of us.
If we do not understand it, we will have to keep on roaming this world,
always coming and going. You are born now here in India, but you can never
say that you will not be born as a dog in Russia next time. We do not know
whether we will be born as some tree, as a rat in China or as a snake in
Nagaland next time. We have got a human birth in India this time, and if we
can practise Krishna consciousness during this life, we can reach our own
home.
We are staying now in a rented house—staying in somebody else's house, we
think it is our home, but it is not so. This place is not our home!
kaya bara eli kaya bara geli
tabu tattva na sikhili
nijer matha nije khaili
e-dosa dibe kare bhai?
"Coming and going, coming and going, you never learnt anything. You have been
eating your own brain—who will you blame now, brother?"
(Folklore)
When are we going to leave this world? We keep coming to this world again and
again, but it is all a waste—we simply come and go. If you do not worship the
holy feet of Nitai, then your life is a waste ("Nitai-charan na bhajila
yaoya asa sara haila"). You hear kirtans, but if you chant
understanding the glory and meaning of these kirtans, then it is very
good.
