Patita-Pavan His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
We worship Lord Sri Krishna, who is so merciful, but Gauranga Mahaprabhu is even more merciful. Krishna fought so many demons, but Gauranga Mahaprabhu never fought—He took out His chakra only once, but even then Nityananda Prabhu stopped Him. Nityananda Prabhu is Mahaprabhu's best friend, His own self (dui ange eka rupa—Nitai and Gaura are manifest as two, but They are one), so when blood fell from Nityananda Prabhu's head (Haridas Thakur told Mahaprabhu the news that Madhai had hit Him, that Nityananda Prabhu had fallen down), could Mahaprabhu remain calm? Angry, He called His Sudarsan, "Chakra, chakra, chakra!" but when He came, Nityananda Prabhu stopped Him, "Prabhu, what are you doing? Did we not talk about Kali-yuga? If You do not rescue Jagai and Madhai, then why is Your name patita-pavan (rescuer of the fallen)? Then why are You coming with Your chakra to kill them?" In the end, Mahaprabhu did not kill them—Nityananda Prabhu stopped Him. That is why Nityananda Prabhu is elder than Mahaprabhu—those who are elder can chastise the younger. When He was Laksman (the Lord's younger brother), He had to tolerate so many atrocities from His brother—Rama sent Sita to the forest, etc. In Rama-lila, King Dasarath could not tell a lie, but in Krishna-lila, Vasudev lied to Kamsa. Vasudev told him, "Do not kill your sister, I will give all our children to you." Did he do it? He did not—he took Krishna, went all the way to Gokula, and instead of Krishna brought back a girl. Mother Yasoda had a child that night, and she did not know if she had a son or a daughter. But Dasarath is strict about following rules—he sends his son to the forest giving priority to moral obligation and being righteous. Ramachandra was also righteous. To please His subjects He threw Sita into fire, and even that was not enough—He then sent her to live in the forest in Valmiki's ashram. Another important pastime is when Krishna killed Putana. Putana came to kill Krishna, but what did Krishna do? He gave her His mercy. How this happened is described in Bhagavatam. Krishna was a small baby, He was lying down, but He knew everything—He knew who was coming. What did Putana do? She wore a gopi dress and came to Krishna dressed as a gopi. Seeing her gopi dress, Krishna became so enchanted that He gave her the position of His mother by drinking her milk. When He started drinking her milk, He grasped her so strongly (He had to take her life somehow) that together with her milk, He sucked her life out. Putana cried, "Leave me! Leave me! Stop, stop! Do not drink any more!" but Krishna did not stop. Krishna does not easily catch anyone, but if He catches somebody, He does not leave them easily after that. When Krishna sucked out Putana's life, she ran out into a field nearby and fell dead. Her body became enormous and it turned into a demoness's body. When everybody heard the noise of her falling body and came to see what had happened, they were astounded to see the scene. Gopal was unharmed though, it was nothing for Him. Usually, when somebody dies, they make a bamboo platform and burn the body on it, but Putana's body was so enormous that they had to cut it into many pieces and burn it piece by piece. When her body was burning, so much fragrance was coming from everywhere—aguru, chandan, etc. Everybody wondered, "What is this smell?" But it was Putana's body burning. If we burn our body, do you think the smell of chandan will come? But this is what happened in Putana's case. We should remember these things...
