Supreme Religion His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Jay Gurudev. Hari bol!
Jay Om Vishnupad Jagad-Guru Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami
Maharaj ki jay Hari bol! How are you, everybody? It is very nice to see you all. I know that by the mercy of Gurudev everything is going on properly and perfectly at the temple there. At least some devotees are staying at the Parama Karuna temple in Caracas. Despite the pandemic situation, despite so many austerities and a bad financial condition, you are staying at the temple, taking care of the Deities, taking care of the devotees and the ashram. It gives me so much pleasure and happiness. I have heard that some devotees are waiting for initiation, and I have heard that they were already born into a family of devotees. It is good that these children follow their parents. They want to practise properly – they want to follow Krishna consciousness and progress more in their spiritual life – so they want to receive initiation and practise Krishna consciousness through chanting the glories of the Lord and service to the guru, his devotees and the Lord. They already come from a devotees' family, but taking initiation will be even more valuable for their spiritual life. Actually, it is not so easy to be born in a devotees' family. Sometimes, people are born in devotees' families, but they do not follow their parents. These children are following their parents and want to practise Krishna consciousness; they want to chant and glorify the Lord, they want to follow all the rules and regulations – that is their great fortune. This is a great luck. It is not a simple matter; it is a very big matter to be born in a devotees' family. I have heard that they come from a very pious family. It is good. In this Age of Kali, Krishna personally comes in the form of His Name. There is also something I want to say to you today. 'At the very end of Dvapar-yuga when sixty thousand rishis were about to finish their great fire sacrifice that they had been doing for a thousand years to attain Vishnu-loka, they felt dissatisfied with what they had done. At that time, Suta Goswami came to Naimisaranya, and all those sixty thousand rishis surrendered to Suta Goswami, saying, "We are your disciples. Please instruct us." Although Srila Suta Goswami was born into a lower than brahman family, he possesses transcendental knowledge and has direct realisation of the Lord – therefore, the sages in Naimisaranya accepted him as their guru and asked him six questions: what is ultimately good for a jiva soul? Through what practice or religion can the soul get ultimate happiness? and so on. 'Approaching the questions of the sages with much respect, Sri Suta Goswamipad, who was very expect in all scriptures, replied:
sa vai pumsam paro dharmo yato bhaktir adhoksaje '"The supreme occupation [dharma] for all humanity is that by which men can attain to loving devotional service unto the transcendental Lord. Such devotional service must be unmotivated and uninterrupted to completely satisfy the self." (Srimad Bhagavatam, 1.2.7) 'No matter how many religious works a jiva soul performs according to its capacity, its main and topmost religion is bhagavat-dharma (devotion unto the Supreme Personality of God). Practising this topmost religion (devotion) brings complete satisfaction to one's soul (atma). In Kali-yuga, jiva souls have a short lifetime, they are unfortunate, disturbed by diseases, and covered by all kinds of unwanted elements—if these jiva souls practise devotion to the Lord, i.e. if they can practise hearing, chanting, remembering, etc. of the Holy Names of the Lord, narrations about the Lord, and His pastimes and His qualities, they will get spiritual benefit and happiness. If you practise fire sacrifices, austerities, vows, etc.—anything except for devotion to the Supreme Lord Vasudev—the soul will not attain the happiness of the soul. The authors of the scriptures say that this devotion is causeless and irresistible. Selfish undertaking, knowledge-seeking, fire sacrifices, etc. cannot obstruct such pure devotion. Just as the current of the Ganges automatically goes towards the ocean, in the same way, the unrestrained current of the Mandakini river of devotion makes all kinds of happiness besides the happiness of devotion (i.e. the joy of enjoyment, the joy of liberation or the joy of realising the soul, the joy of attaining perfections) insignificant, and brings pure devotion to the heart of the devotees who are intent on attaining divine love. Such devotion is called "exclusive", "nirguna", or "direct" devotion. It is impossible to get such devotion by practising any religion that belongs to the three-modal material world created by Maya (controlled by goodness, passion, ignorance, etc.). There is no cause or effect of devotion. The purpose of getting devotion is devotion itself. Devotion, the Lord, and devotee are all eternal and supra-mundane. However, how does one get devotion? This devotion comes by the mercy of Sri Gurupadpadma (the embodiment of shelter, asraya-vigraha) and the Supreme Lord (the object of worship, visaya-vigraha). Through karma and other practices, you can enjoy material world (gratify your material senses), or get even more heavenly happiness, even attain the post of Brahma, but such happiness is transient. The whole universe is destroyed at the time of universal devastation.' There are more things written here (Guidance 4, chapter 'Devotion: the soul's ultimate happiness'), but we do not have time to read everything now, that is why I want to cut it short. In this Age of Kali, you are a very fortunate soul because you have got the association of great devotees, good devotees. You know what our religion is, you understand that Kali-yuga's religion is Harinama-sankirtan, and that this Harinama-sankritan must come from Goloka Vrindavan. This Holy Name comes from Krishna to Brahma, from Brahma to Narad, from Narad to Vyasadev, from Vyasadev to Madhvacharya; in this way, all the way to Madhavendra Puri and Ishwar Puri. Then, the Holy Name came from Ishwar Puri to Mahaprabhu, and from Mahaprabhu, the line eventually descends to Srila Jagananth Das Babaji Maharaj, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur, Srila Gaura Kishor Das Babaji Maharaj, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur, our Param Gurudev Om Vishnupad Srila Bhakti Raksak Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj, and my spiritual master and beloved gurudev Om Vishnupad Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj. In his lifetime, my gurudev told me, 'If somebody has got proper association and wants to practise properly, following all rules and regulations, they can receive the initiation (you can give initiation to them).' I have heard that you have come to this line through good association, so I am ready to give you initiation. There are four main rules and regulations. Everybody knows that. No gambling, drinking alcohol (wine, etc.) or taking drugs (marijuana, etc.), no illicit sex, and you must be a vegetarian your whole life. Also, you must properly follow ekadasi and temple rules and regulations. If you follow these rules and regulations, you can receive initiation. All right, give the beads to him now.
শ্রীকৃষ্ণচৈতন্য প্রভু নিত্যানন্দ ।
sri-krsna-chaitanya prabhu nityananda This is the Pancha-tattva's Name. Chant first Pancha-tattva's Name and ask Them for mercy because They have brought this Holy Name to this abode and we cannot chant without their mercy. Then, start from the big beads. Chant on the first big bead:
হরে কৃষ্ণ হরে কৃষ্ণ কৃষ্ণ কৃষ্ণ হরে হরে ।
hare krsna hare krsna krsna krsna hare hare Then, the second bead, one by one:
হরে কৃষ্ণ হরে কৃষ্ণ কৃষ্ণ কৃষ্ণ হরে হরে ।
hare krsna hare krsna krsna krsna hare hare Chanting in this way from the big beads to the small bedas, turn the beads and chant from the small beads to the big beads, without crossing the sumeru bead. Chant in this way sixteen rounds or more. If you are busy with service any day, you can chant at least four rounds. Four rounds must be chanted every day. There is also the ten offences book. The ten offences are written there. You must read what these offences are and avoid them. If you can chant the Holy Name without offence, you will get the result quickly: Krishna will reveal Himself in your heart, and you will be successful in your spiritual life.
