Today is the disappearance day of Srila Prabhupad Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur. Wherever he may be now, we pray at his holy lotus feet that he may give us his mercy so that we may pass this life serving him heart and soul. This is a very important day for us. May Srila Prabhupad Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur bestow his mercy on us so that we can serve him and attain spiritual benefit – so that we may serve him and thereby rescue ourselves from this world.

In the end, Srila Prabhupad left this world after hearing from the holy mouth of Srila Bhakti Raksak Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj a kirtan that was very dear to his heart. You all know this kirtan: ‘Sri Rupa Manjari-pada, sei mora sampada’. Hearing this separation kirtan (viraha-kirtan), he gave up his body and left this world. At that time, devotees would stay with Srila Prabhupad continuously throughout the day, and Srila Sridhar Maharaj agreed to keep his duty from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. So, that day, he had finished his duty at 4 a.m. and went to take a shower and get ready for the mangal-arati. Shortly after 4 a.m., Srila Prabhupad asked, ‘Where is Sridhar Maharaj? Is he here? I want to hear one kirtan, “Sri Rupa Manjari-pada”.’ As Srila Sridhar Maharaj was not there, the devotee who was in charge of the temple (it all happened at Bagh Bazar Gaudiya Math in Kolkata) told another devotee who was present at that time and who could sing very well to sing this kirtan. The devotee started singing this kirtan in a very melodious way, but Srila Prabhupad shouted, ‘Please stop it! I do not want to hear the tune!’ Everybody was astonished, ‘The person who has never sung in his life is being asked to sing now!’ Srila Sridhar Maharaj hardly ever sang kirtan – he did not sing very well…

…Srila Prabhupad said, ‘What is the use living for 120 years if you do not practise Krishna consciousness? If you live only for ten years but you chant the Holy Name, then there is no need to have a 120-year-long lifetime. If you do wrong things, if you do bad things, if you say bad things, if you gossip about others and criticise others, then what is the use living for 120 years? You can live for ten years only: if you chant the Holy Name and serve the Lord, you will get all benefit. There is no use living for 120 years.’ Do you understand? These are Srila Prabhupad’s words, and these are very beautiful words.
