Krishna is so merciful, but Gaura is even more merciful than Krishna.

Krishna performs madhurya-lila (pastimes of sweetness), and Gaura performs audarya-lila (pastimes of magnanimity). Gaura forgot His own self while magnanimously rescuing jiva souls. When Gauranga Mahaprabhu came to Kashi, He lamented, ‘I have brought Krishna-prema from Gauda-dham for anyone and everyone, without asking any price for it, but there is nobody to take this Krishna-prema! I have travelled all over India, from South India up to Haridwar – whom shall I give it to?’ Gauranga Mahaprabhu and Sri Nityananda Prabhu distributed Krishna-prema without asking any price! Gaura gave Krishna-prema to the entire world. This is so beautiful.

We also chant in one of the kirtans,

কে যাবি কে যাবি ভাই ভবসিন্ধু পার ।
ধন্য কলিযুগে রে চৈতন্য অবতার ॥

ke yabi ke yabi re bhai bhava-sindhu para
dhanya kali-yuge re chaitanya avatara

’Brother, who is coming? Who is coming to cross this ocean of material existence? Lord Chaitanya descends in this blessed Kali-yuga!’

হরিনামের তরীখানি শ্রীগুরুকাণ্ডারী ।
সংকীর্ত্তনকেরোয়াল দু’বাহু পসারি ॥

harinamera tarikhani sri-guru-kandari
sankirtana-keroyala du’bahu pasari

‘The Holy Name is the boat, the guru is the captain, and the oars are two upraised arms in sankirtan.’

The Holy Name is a boat, and the captain of this boat is gurudev. If we can take shelter of gurudev and practise Krishna consciousness, we will get real benefit. It is necessary to surrender to the guru. Many people come to this line, but they do not really take shelter of their guru.

আশ্রয় লইয়া ভজে, তারে কৃষ্ণ নাহি ত্যজে,
আর সব মরে অকারণ ॥

asraya laiya bhaje, tare krsna nahi tyaje,
ara saba mare akarane

‘Krishna never leaves those who have taken shelter in His devotees and serve them; everyone else simply dies in vain.’

It is necessary to take shelter to practise Krishna consciousness. We must surrender to a bona fide guru, surrender to Nityananda Prabhu, and practise Krishna consciousness in His shelter. There is no other way for us. There is no other way to attain the real result. Nitai is ‘Doyal Thakur’ – He is our worshippable Lord, mercy incarnate.
