Know and Practise

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
25 December 2010, part 3

It is written in Bhagavatam (9.4.68),

সাধবো হৃদয়ং মহ্যং সাধূনাং হৃদয়ন্ত্বহম্ ।
মদন্যত্তে ন জানন্তি নাহং তেভ্যো মনাগপি ॥

sadhavo hrdayam mahyam sadhunam hrdayam tv aham
mad-anyat te na jananti naham tebhyo manag api

"Vaishnavs and sadhus are My heart, and I am also their heart. Sadhus do not know anything except Me, and I also do not know anything except sadhus." That is the meaning of this sloka from Bhagavatam.

If you read first two-three pages of Chaitanya-charitamrita (first chapter), you will see everything is here...

People keep Srimad Bhagavad-gita in their houses and think that if they worship Gita, then it is sufficient—it is not necessary to read Gita. Do you know what Indian people do? They do not read Gita—they keep Gita and put a Tulasi leaf with water on the book every day, and all Gita becomes rotten.

It is necessary to read the books, to know what is written in them and to practise that—it is necessary to study. Otherwise—if you do not read—you must listen to Hari-katha. It is necessary to surrender, to have surrendered mood. It is not necessary to know much or to study much. Srimati Radharani did not go to Cambridge or Oxford university. Which university did Radharani study at? In Mahaprabhu's time, there was an old lady, Duhkhi, at Srivas Pandit's house. What university did she study at? Nowhere—but she got Mahaprabhu's mercy! How? Through chanting. Even in Jharikhand, even tigers, deer also got mercy. Such mercy comes from the transcendental power, there is no other way to get it. So, it is necessary to read the books, otherwise you will not get anything. If you do not read, you can chant the kirtans...

There is another sloka in Bhagavatam (11.17.27),

আচার্য্যং মাং বিজানীয়ান্নাবমন্যেত কর্হিচিৎ ।
ন মর্ত্ত্যবুদ্ধ্যাসূয়েত সর্ব্বদেবময়ো গুরুঃ ॥

acharyam mam vijaniyan, navamanyeta karhichit
na martya buddhyasuyeta, sarva deva-mayo guruh

(Sri Krishna said to Uddhava:) "You should know the bona fide spiritual master as My very Self. Gurudeva is the embodiment of all the gods. Never dishonour him or find fault in him by ascribing any mundane conception of place, time and circumstances to him."

"Know Guru as My own Self." If you underestimate the Guru thinking he is a human, then because of this sin you will be ruined. Guru is sarva-deva-maya (all demigods are present within him). People say, "Do not disrespect the Guru," and in the meantime they hidingly take ganja, pan, do nonsense. Gurudev sees everything! You must understand this.

Reaching Honey
'If you chant the Holy Name without offence, if you serve the Lord sincerely, without being a hypocrite and without deceit, if you follow Krishna consciousness and practise properly, you must get the taste of the honey.'

Gurudev! krpa-bindu diya
'Gurudev, give this servant a drop of your mercy, and make me more humble than a blade of grass.'
গুরুদেব! কৃপাবিন্দু দিয়া

You can distribute prasadam and they will get a little benefit, but if we distribute
Krishna-katha that will bring more benefit to them.
