Daily Kirtans

"It may not be palatable every day, but it is necessary and very important to realise why we sing these songs every day—through that we can cross over the illusion."

—Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj

"I sing every day for your practice, to engage you in kirtan. Every day I sing the same songs, morning and evening—what for? I can sing all songs, but I do not do that because you must practise. You too must sing the same songs every morning and evening at the place or temple where you live. That is necessary."

—Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj

If you try, you can do everything. You can listen to Gurudev's lectures, listen to some songs of Bhakti Vinod Thakur, or you can sing some songs of Bhakti Vinod Thakur—but you must know the meaning of the songs otherwise you will not get taste through it; when you understand the meaning, you will get the real taste, the real sweetness through it.

—Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj, "Practise and Preach"

"If somebody has no manpower, or stays alone in the house, they can sing songs with kartals. It takes only 20-25 minutes to sing five songs—Sri Guru charana-padma, a Pancha-tattva song, Vaishnav Thakur, Nityananda's kirtan, Mahaprabhu's kirtan, and mahamantra. When you chant on your beads, that is another thing—when chanting on the beads so many things can come to your mind, but when you are singing so many things will not come to your mind at that time. Sing five songs in the morning and five songs in the evening. Can you not find 40 minutes? Practise Krishna consciousness in this way and you will see how much your spiritual life will increase and you will not get any taste for the outside world."

—Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj, "Wholesome Transformation"

Vandana: "Why do we recite the vandana of Vaishnavs, Nityananda Prabhu, Gauranga Mahaprabhu, Radha-Krishna, Tulasi Devi? Vandana means calling them, praying them for mercy, 'Prabhu, we are going to chant Your glorification. Please give us some mercy.'"

—Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj

Amara jivana:
(1) "Prabhupad Srila Saraswati Thakur said, 'Every day, when you leave your bed, first broom, dust your mind and make it clean through this song.'"

—Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj

(2) "Srila Guru Maharaj always says that we should sing this song because we do not realise what our condition is. Actually what is written in this song is a fact, this is our real life."

—Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj

Sarvasva tomara: "If you always recite this song from Saranagati, your ego will not come, you will not think you are a Vaishnav. Take remnants of the Vaishnavs, prasad, and always think you are a fallen soul, then you will never get proud, "Oh, I am taking the remnants!" Humility, dainyata, will come."

—Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj

Below are the main kirtans that are sung daily at Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math and that His Divine Grace Srila B.N. Acharya Maharaj habitually sings with the devotees. The audio accompanying each kirtan is to give an idea of the tune of a particular song, and the "or" songs among the evening kirtans are some of the frequent alternatives (they are generally not sung all at a time). This page is prepared to give some guidelines that can help devotees in their service, not as hard and fast rules and regulations. Also, the pocket edition of the Kirtan Guide contains all these songs and is available for purchase at our online bookstore.

Note for the thrifty Internet users (mobile phones, pre-paid data, etc.): the size of each audio varies between 1 and 5 Mb.

sikhaya saranagati bhakatera prana [2]

To distribute the most rare form of divine love, He teaches surrender, which is the life of the devotees.

Humility, self-submission, embracing the Lord's guardianship, maintaining the faith that 'Krishna will certainly protect me'...

O worshippable Vaisnavas, I offer you this prayer. I am very fallen and misbehaved. Destiny has immersed me in the fearsome ocean of material existence. Please grab me by the hair and pull me to the shore.

vidhi bada balavan na sune dharama-jnana
sadai karama-pase bandhe
na dekhi tarana lesa yata dekhi saba klesa
anatha katare tei kande [2]

Destiny is very powerful. It does not listen to my knowledge of religion and always binds me with the ropes of karma. I do not see even a trace of hope. All I see is hardship. Thus helpless and distressed, I cry.

apana apana sthane tane
aichana amara mana phire yena andha jana

nitai-pada-kamala koti-chandra-susitala
ye chhayaya jagata judaya
hena nitai vine bhai radha-krsna paite nai

Cooling like ten million moons, Nitai's lotus feet soothe the world with their shade. O brother! Without Nitai, you cannot reach Radha-Krishna. Firmly grasp Nitai's feet.

se sambandha nahi yara vrtha janma gela tara
sei pasu bada durachara
nitai na balila mukhe majila samsara-sukhe
vidya-kule ki karibe tara [2]

The life of one who had no connection with Nitai passed in vain. Such an animal is very wicked. What will learning (aristocratic birth) do for one who was immersed in worldly pleasures and never called aloud, 'Nitai'?

ahankare matta haina nitai-pada pasariya
asatyere satya kari' mani
nitaiyer karuna habe vraje radha-krsna pabe
dhara nitaiyer charan du'khani [3]

Maddened with pride, forgetting Nitai's feet, I accept untruth as truth. When Nitai bestows His mercy you will reach Radha-Krishna in Vraja. Grasp Nitai's feet!

nitaiyer charana satya tanhara sevaka nitya
nitai-pada sada kara asa
narottama bada duhkhi nitai more kara sukhi
rakha ranga-charanera pasa [4]

Nitai's feet are truth, and His servants are eternal. Always aspire for Nitai's feet. Narottam is very sad: "O Nitai! Make me happy. Keep me beside your reddish feet."

I meditate upon Sri Radha and Sri Govinda being worshipped by Their dear girlfriends as They sit upon a throne within a beautiful jeweled temple beneath the wish-fulfilling trees of the divine abode of Vrindavan.

sriman rasa-rasarambhi vamsi-vata-tata-sthitah

May Gopinath, the beautiful originator of the rasa-lila, who stands on the riverbank at Vamsi Vat and attracts the gopis with His flute-song, bestow auspiciousness upon us.

vrndayai tulasi-devyai priyayai kesavasya cha
krsna-bhakti-prade devi satyavatyai namo namah

Again and again I offer my obeisance unto Vrnda Devi, who is known as Tulasi Devi and Satyavati, who is most dear to Krishna, and who bestows devotion to Krishna upon us.

chhaya sat-sanga deha' he amare

sei pasu bada durachara
nitai na balila mukhe majila samsara-sukhe

The life of one who had no connection with Nitai passed in vain. Such an animal is very wicked. What will learning (aristocratic birth) do for one who was immersed in worldly pleasures and never called aloud, 'Nitai'?

asatyere satya kari' mani
nitaiyer karuna habe vraje radha-krsna pabe

They are the only source of joy. Nityananda and Gaurachandra are the only source of joy.

(mar kheyeo nam prema yache eman dayal ke va achhe)
