Sri Sri Siksastakam Songs (The verses are spoken by Sri Krishna
Chaitanya Mahaprabhu,
VERSE ONE
"Sri Krishna-sankirtan cleanses the mirror of consciousness, extinguishes the
raging forest fire of material existence, shines moonlight on the evening
lotus of good fortune, is the life of the divine knowledge—the life of
souls enlightened with paramour love for the Lord, expands the ocean of
ecstasy, is the taste of full nectar at every moment, and soothes the entire
self. May Sri Krishna-sankirtan be supremely victorious!"
GITI
pita-varana kali-pavana gora Golden Gora, the saviour of the Age of Kali, sings as follows, overwhelmed with love.
chitta-darpana-pari marjana kari All glory to Krishna-kirtan, which cleanses the mirror of consciousness and delights the soul!
hela-bhava-dava-nirvapana-vrtti All glory to Krishna-kirtan, which extinguishes the fire of material existence and ends all suffering!
sreyah-kumuda-vidhu-jyotsna-prakasa All glory to Krishna-kirtan, the joy of devotion, which shines moonlight on the evening lotus of good fortune!
visuddha-vidya-vadhu-jivana-rupa All glory to Krishna-kirtan, the very embodiment of ultimate perfection, the life of the souls purely enlightened with paramour love for the Lord!
ananda-payonidhi-vardhana-kirti All glory to Krishna-kirtan, which is renowned for swelling the milk-ocean of ecstasy and causing it to overflow!
pade pade piyusa-svada-pradata All glory to Krishna-kirtan, which gives the soul the taste of nectar at every moment and grants divine love!
bhakati-vinoda svatma-snapana-vidhana All glory to Krishna-kirtan, which soothes the soul of Bhakti Vinod and is a storehouse of divine love!
VERSE TWO
"O Lord, You have manifested Your many Names, put all Your power in Them, and
made no rules regarding the time for remembering Them. Such is Your great
mercy. My misfortune, however, is such that I have no attachment to Your
Names."
GITI
tunhu daya-sagara tarayite prani You are an ocean of mercy. To deliver the souls, You have brought Your many Names to this world and taught everyone to chant Them.
sakala sakati dei' name tohara You have put all Your power in Your Names, and You have not made any rules regarding the time for chanting Them.
sri-nama-chintamani tohari samana Your Names are wish-fulfilling jewels equal to You, and You have distributed Them throughout the world, O ocean of mercy!
tuya daya aichhana parama udara Such is Your extremely liberal mercy. I, however, O Lord, am extremely unfortunate.
nahi janamala name anuraga mora I have no attachment to Your Names. The heart of Bhakti Vinod is overwhelmed with sorrow.
VERSE THREE
"One who is humbler than a blade of grass, more forbearing than a tree, who
gives due honour to others without desiring it for himself, is qualified to
always chant the Holy Name of Krishna."
GITI
sri-krsna-kirtane yadi manasa tohara If you aspire to chant the Name of Krishna, then, with great care, become qualified to do so.
trnadhika hina, dina, akinchana chhara Give up your false ego, and always consider yourself lower than grass, poor, needy, and mean.
vrksa-sama ksama-guna karabi sadhana Practise tolerance like a tree. Give up vengeance and nurture others.
jivana-nirvahe ane udvega na dibe Do not trouble others for your own upkeep, and forget your own happiness in the course of helping others.
ha-ileo sarva-gune guni mahasaya Even if you are honourable and qualified with all qualities, give up desire for prestige and make your heart prideless.
krsna-adhisthana sarva-jive jani sada Knowing Krishna resides eternally within every soul, always respectfully honour everyone.
dainya, daya, anye mana, pratistha varjana Humility, compassion, honouring others, and giving up prestige—become qualified with these four qualities and chant the Name.
bhakati-vinoda kandi bale prabhu paya Crying at the feet of the Lord, Bhakti Vinod says, "O when will You give me these qualifications?"
VERSE FOUR
"O Lord of the universe! I do not desire wealth, followers, beautiful women,
or learning. Birth after birth, O Lord, let me have unconditional devotion to
You."
GITI
prabhu tava pada-yuge mora nivedana O Lord! This is my appeal at Your feet: I do not pray for bodily pleasure, learning, wealth, or followers.
nahi magi svarga ara moksa nahi magi I do not pray for heaven, I do not pray for liberation, and I do not pray for any supernatural powers.
nija-karma-guna-dose ye ye janma pai Receiving any birth as a result of my piety and sins, birth after birth, let me sing Your Name and glories.
ei matra asa mama tomara charane My only desire is that unconditional devotion to Your feet always arises in my heart constantly.
visaye ye priti ebe achhaye amara Let me have love for Your feet like the love I have now for material things.
vipade sampade taha thakuk samabhave In misfortune and in good fortune, let that love remain the same, and day by day, let it increase by the influence of Your Name.
pasu paksi haye thaki' svarge va niraye Whether a bird or a beast, in heaven or in hell, let devotion to You remain in the heart of Bhakti Vinod.
VERSE FIVE
"O Son of Nanda, mercifully consider me, Your servant who has fallen into the terrible ocean of material existence, to be a particle of dust at Your lotus feet."
GITI
anadi karama-phale padi' bhavarnava-jale As a result of my actions prior to contact with time and space, I have fallen into the ocean of material existence, and I do not see any means of deliverance. Day and night, my heart burns in the vicious poison of this world, and my mind never finds any satisfaction.
asa-pasa sata sata klesa deya avirata The shackles of hundreds and hundreds of desires constantly trouble me, and the waves of the tendency to enjoy play all round me. The six bandits of lust, anger, greed, pride, illusion, and envy torment me, and the time of my death has come.
jnana-karma thaga dui more pratariya lai' The thugs renunciation and exploitation have cheated me and finally thrown me into the ocean of material existence. At such a time as this, You, Krishna, the ocean of mercy, are my only friend. Mercifully rescue me by force.
patita kinkare dhari' pada-padma-dhuli kari' Take Your fallen servant and make him a particle of dust at Your lotus feet; give Bhakti Vinod shelter. Forgetting that I am Your eternal servant, I am bound by the shackles of Maya, O merciful Lord!
VERSE SIX
When will tears stream from my eyes, my voice falter, and the hair on my body stand on end as I call Your Name?
GITI
aparadha-phale mama chitta bhela vajra-sama As a result of my offences, my heart has become as hard as a thunderbolt and experiences no ecstasy in chanting Your Name. In despair, O Lord, I chant Your Name. With great sorrow, I call Your Name again and again.
dina-dayamaya karuna-nidana O ocean of mercy, compassionate to the poor, give me a drop of love. Save my life.
kabe tuya nama-uchcharane mora When will streams of tears pour from my eyes as I chant Your Name?
gadagada-svara kanthe upajaba When will my voice falter? When will words come from my mouth?
pulake bharaba sarira hamara When will the hair on my body stand on end? When will I perspire, tremble, and become stunned again and again?
vivarna-sarire haraobun jnana When will I turn pale and faint? When will my heart take full shelter in Your Name?
milaba hamara kiye aichhe dina When will I meet with such a day? Bhakti Vinod has no devotion.
VERSE SEVEN
"O Govinda! Without You, the world is empty. Tears are flooding my eyes like rain, and a moment seems like forever."
GITI (1)
ga-ite ga-ite nama ki dasa haila Chanting the Name again and again, what was my realisation? Within my heart I knew, "I am an eternal servant of Krishna."
janilama maya-pase e jada jagate I knew that, bound by maya's ropes, in this dull mundane universe, I only get various miseries because of separation from Govinda.
ara ye samsara mora nahi lage bhala And I don't like this world of birth and death. Where shall I go to see Krishna? This was my biggest worry.
kandite kandite mora ankhi barisaya I began weeping and weeping; my tears fell. Torrents of rain poured from my eyes.
nimesa ha-ila mora sata yuga sama A moment for me is like a hundred yugas now. I cannot bear this separation from Govinda.
sunya dhara-tala, chaudike dekhiye, The world is empty; as I survey the four directions, the entire surface of the world is void. My life is empty, my mind is listless; I am indifferent and apathetic towards everything. Depressed, melancholy and forlorn, my life has no meaning now. What do I do now? I cannot remain steady. I can no longer maintain my life.
vraja-basi-gana mora prana rakha O residents of Vrindavan! Save my life and show me Radhanatha, the Lord of Sri Radha. Considering this humble prayer of Bhakti Vinoda, please give him Your association and take him with You.
sri-krsna-viraha ara sahite na pari I am unable to further tolerate this separation from my Lord Krishna and am ready to give up my life in two days or four.
GITI (2)
gaite 'govinda' nama upajila bhava-grama And while I sang Govinda-Nama a host of ecstasies arose, within me. I saw Sundar-syama—the Dance-King—on Yamuna's shores, with Radha, Vrisabhanu's daughter, sporting in Pastimes of love, playing His flute beside the water, while a kadamba tree above cast shade upon the Holy Couple.
dekhiya yugala-dhana, asthira ha-ila mana, On seeing this, my mind was stunned. I lost my senses. Unaware of time, I fainted—dead and numbed. The treasured Couple, when I awoke, had gone; my Vraja vision broke.
GITI (3)
sakhi go, kemate dhariba parana O gopis! My friends! How can I maintain my life? A moment is like a millenium.
sravanera dhara, ankhi barisaya, Showers of tears pour from my eyes like the monsoon rains of August. The whole world is empty. In separation from Govinda I cannot maintain my life. Tell me, how can I go on?
bhakati-vinoda, asthira ha-iya, How will I survive this separation? Bhakti Vinoda, in this unsteady state of mind, again takes shelter of the Holy Name and calls out, "O Radha-natha!" Save my life by giving me Your darsan and so deliver me from death.
VERSE EIGHT
"Krishna may embrace me in love or trample me under His feet. He may break my heart by hiding Himself from me. Let that debauchee do whatever He likes, but He will always be the only Lord of my life."
GITI (1)
bandhu-gana! sunaha vachana mora O my friends! Listen to my words. I am filled to overflowing with devotional ecstasy when I have a divine vision of that Thief who has stolen my heart.
vichaksana kari', dekhite chahile, And when I want to see him more clearly, He disappears from sight and becomes invisible. Again, not seeing Him, my life-air weeps and my grief knows no bounds.
jagatera bandhu sei kabhu more laya satha Sometimes Krishna, the friend of the universe, takes me as one of His own, and sometimes He ignores me, but however He keeps me, He is the Lord of my life.
darsana-ananda-dane, sukha deya mora prane, When He gives His blissful darsan to me, He gives happiness to my soul. He gives me great ecstasy by allowing me to see Him and by speaking affectionately to me. Again He goes away, removing Himself from my sight. And by not letting me see Him, He burns my heart with the fire of separation.
yahe ta'ra sukha hoya, sei sukha mama But even though He pains my soul in this way, He is still the Lord of my life. Whatever is His happiness is also my happiness. And so, for me, happiness and distress is all the same.
bhakati-vinoda, samyoge viyoge, In this way, Bhakti Vinoda, in both union and separation, knows that Krishna is the only Lord of his soul. Krishna's happiness is my happiness. He is the Lord of my life; there is no other Lord for me than Him.
GITI (2)
yoga-pithopari-sthita asta-sakhi-suvestita At the yoga-pitha, surrounded by the asta-sakhis, in Vrindavan Forest, in a grove of kadamba trees, by the side of Sri Radha, holding His flute, Sri Krishna enchants all souls within the universe. I fall at His feet and surrender my life to Him.
sakhi-ajnamata kari donhara sevana Following the orders of a sakhi, I engage in service to the Holy Couple, Sri Radha and Krishna, always considering myself a maidservant at Their lotus feet.
kabhu krpa kari' mama hasta dhari', Sometimes being kind, They take me by the hand and speak sweet words to me out of affection. Taking tambula, the two of Them eat and accept a garland from me with great delight.
adarsana haya kakhana ki chhale Again, They disappear from my vision by some trick. Not seeing Radha and Krishna, my heart burns in agony.
yekhane sekhane, thakuka du'jane, Here or there, wherever They stay, I am the maidservant of Their lotus feet. Through the happiness of union and the agony of separation, I am Their maidservant.
radha-krsna prana mora jivane marane Radha and Krishna are my life and soul in life and in death; whether They protect me or take my life—may they always be happy.
bhakati-vinoda, ana nahi jane, Bhakti Vinoda knows nothing else. Falling at the feet of a sakhi, Bhakti Vinoda stays among the intimate confidants of Sri Radha. The lotus feet of Sri Radha and Krishna is Bhakti Vinoda's eternal desire.
