(7/7) Gauri Das Pandit's Chastisement
His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
As I have mentioned earlier, Sri Gauri Das Pandit lived together with his disciple, Sri Chaitanya Das. One day, it happened so that Sri Chaitanya Das invited everybody for Sri Gaura Purnima without his guru's permission. He did not ask his guru first because Sri Gauri Das Pandit had gone away and was coming late, so Sri Chaitanya Das worried, 'Gurudev is not coming, but Gaura Purnima is in just two days. What will happen with the festival?' So, he decided to invite everybody himself. He told everybody, 'Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's appearance day is the day after tomorrow, please come.' The same day Sri Gauri Das Pandit came back home. When Sri Chaitanya Das told him that he had invited everybody to the festival because Sri Gauri Das Pandit was late, Sri Gauri Das Pandit got angry, 'Who gave you the instruction to invite everybody? Get out!' Sri Chaitanya Das accepted it, 'All right, my gurudev has told me to get out, so I will get out.' He left and went to the bank of the Ganges – he sat there and cried. (The river that flows through Kalna is also the Ganges. Our temple in Kalna is also near the bank, but we do not go there.) Then, people started coming to Sri Gauri Das Pandit with many ingredients: rice, dal, vegetables, and so on. Sri Gauri Das Pandit told them angrily, 'Who told you to come here? What are you doing here? Go to the person who has invited you!' So, everybody searched for Sri Chaitanya Das and, when they found him on the bank of the Ganges, they all went to him. Sri Chaitanya Das wondered, 'I have invited them for the festival, but how will I organise it? Where will I get money?' Then, some people came in a boat loaded with rice, dal, vegetables, oil, sugar, potato, and other things. So, Sri Chaitanya Das made a big festival and celebrated it, dancing and chanting, 'Nitai-Gauranga! Nitai-Gauranga!' In the meantime, Sri Gauri Das Pandit stayed alone at home. On the day of Sri Gaura Purnima, he went to the temple room to make an offering to the Deities (he anyhow cooked something himself and was going to offer it) when suddenly he saw the Deities were not there! The room was empty. He became very angry, 'What?! Gaura-Nitai are mine! How could he take Them away? And how did he even do it? The door was locked!' But a devotee does not go anywhere alone, just as the Deity can never be alone: the Lord always lives in His devotee's heart. What did Sri Gauri Das Pandit do then? He took a stick and went outside without saying a word. He thought, 'I want to see where my Gaura and Nitai have gone!' He came to the bank of the Ganges and saw so many people dancing and celebrating, and amidst them were Gaura and Nitai, towering above everyone, dancing happily! Most people's height is about 5'6" (about 167 cm), but Gaura-Nitai are 7'6" (over 228 cm)! Sri Gauri Das Pandit was angry, 'I see! Dancing, are You? I will punish You today! Why did You come there?!' But when Sri Gauri Das Pandit approached, Gaura-Nitai entered Sri Chaitanya Das's heart. From that time, his name became Hriday Chaitanya ('he in whose heart Chaitanya lives').
Jay Srila Gauri Das Pandit ki jay.
