The Gift of Guru

You can understand easily what Gauranga Mahaprabhu gave to us is inconceivable. No one could give us what He gave, and no one can give also, but we can understand something through the Guru-parampara, through Gurudev. I told in the morning,

যদি গৌর না হ'ত তবে কি হইত
কেমনে ধরিতাম দে ।
রাধার মহিমা প্রেমরস-সীমা
জগতে জানাত কে ? ॥

yadi gaura na ha'ta tabe ki ha-ita
kemane dharitam de
radhara mahima, prema-rasa-sima
jagate janata ke?

"If Gauranga had not come, who would have been able to tell us about the glories of Radharani?" We can also say that if Gurudev had not come, who would have been able to tell us about the glories of Gauranga?

তব নিজ-জন কোন মহাজনে
পাঠাইয়া দিলে তুমি

tava nija-jana kona mahajane
pathaiya dile tumi

O Lord! I am very wicked-minded and have fallen into this material world, but You have sent a great soul, Your associate (to rescue me).

Seeing me so fallen and being merciful, he came to me and said, “O humble soul, listen to this wonderful message and your heart will rejoice.

Krishna sent a Guru to us, and, seeing that I am a very fallen soul and that I have surrendered to him, the Guru came to rescue me. If you surrender to the Lord, then you can recognise the Lord; otherwise who can understand the Guru? Even Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya could not understand who Mahaprabhu is.

Who can recognise the Guru? Who can recognise Mahaprabhu? You cannot see, cannot observe the Guru with your material eyes; but you also have eyes inside, and if you surrender these internal eyes to Gurudev and can see with them, then you can understand who the Guru is, otherwise you can understand neither Gurudev, nor Gauranga—nothing.
