(6) Remembering Srila Guru Maharaj (2)
His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
In the times of Guru Maharaj, there was a famous writer in Nabadwip. He wrote many books about Mahaprabhu and devotion. When he was ninety years old, he wrote a book in honour of his anniversary (he still had good eyes, so he was able to write). One day, this writer came to our Math. Seeing him, Guru Maharaj offered him his obeisance and asked, 'Prabhu, you here?' 'Yes, I have printed a book and wanted to present it to Srila Sridhar Maharaj.' 'Oh, at your age, you took so much trouble to come here. If you had informed me, I could have come to you and brought the book myself.' 'You know, I do not visit anybody to offer my obeisances. In this world, there is only one person I offer my obeisance to – that is Srila Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj. I come here only once a year to present a book or to offer my obeisance – you cannot tell me not to do it. Do not try to stop me.' Such was Srila Sridhar Maharaj's honour. Guru Maharaj could understand what Srila Sridhar Maharaj would do or not do – he knew it, he had such power. Srila Sridhar Maharaj vested such power in him. Not only that, he even composed our Guru Maharaj's (Srila Govinda Maharaj's) pranam-mantra. It is not seen anywhere that the guru composes his disciple's pranam-mantra, but Srila Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj did it, and he even said several times, on different occasions, 'He is more intelligent than me – he knows even more than me.' Such is the certificate that our Guru Maharaj got from Srila Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj. There are so many pastimes, so many things that can be said – it is impossible to tell everything. We must chant guru-mahima properly. We must have love for service. Always remember this. It is my prayer to you all – you have got into the boat where Srila Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj and Srila Gurudev are the captains. If you stay in this boat, then you can reach wherever that boat takes you. To stay in this boat, you must have love for service. The boat will not take many – there is a limit to the number of passangers. So, if you leave this boat, you will lose your change to get to the boat's destination. I told you yesterday also that when you go to primary school, there are a hundred pupils, but by the time you reach high school, there are only fifty pupils left. It must not discourage you – on the contrary, you must try and try to serve more.
