mukam karoti vachalam pangum langhayate girim ‘The dumb can speak, the lame can climb a hill – all it takes is mercy from gurudev.’ (Bhavartha Dipika) Today is a very special day, Sri Siva-ratri vrata day, and we have assembled here to inaugurate our small ashram, a new temple of Sri Sada-Siva Gangadhar jiu. We are going to inaugurate the Deity today – the Deity installation has been almost completed now (everybody has already offered abhisekh). Actually, Sivji Maharaj is a great Vaishnav (vaisnavanam yatha sambhu). He prays to the Lord, and he has some special quality: he was able to enter Lord Krishna's rasa-lila because he has anugatya (he accepted service under the guidance of Vraja-gopis). That is why Lord Krishna told him, 'You are Raseswari (the Mistress of the Rasa-lila).' Even so many Laksmis and Maha-laksmis (the spouse of Lord Narayan Himself) could not and still cannot enter the rasa-lila, but Sivji Maharaj could. Sivji Maharaj is a great Vaishnav, and he took part in many of Lord Krishna's pastimes. When Gopal Krishna was in Nandagram, Sivji Maharaj waited for three days to see Him. He came and asked His Mother Yasoda permission, 'Mother, can I see Gopal?' but Mother Yasoda could not allow him to see Gopal because Sivji Maharaj looked strange to her – he had long matted hair, a beard and a snake around him. She said, 'If Gopal sees you, He will get scared! I cannot let you see Him!' So, Asheshwar Mahadev went a little far from the house and started waiting. He waited, waited and waited. In the meantime, Gopal understood (He knows everything), 'My great devotee, My great friend is waiting to see My face.' He began to cry, pointing in the direction where Lord Siva was sitting. Mother Yasoda and other ladies tried to take Him in their laps and calm Him down, but He only continued crying. Then, Mother Yasoda and Nanda Maharaj went to Sivji Maharaj's place, and as soon as they came, Gopal stopped crying. When the Lord sees His devotee, He always becomes peaceful and calm. Even when Lord Nrisingha saw Prahlad Maharaj, He cooled down, too. You have heard about it. We have a prayer to you all. In this country, and abroad also, people take marijuana and want to be Siva. In this country, instead of worshipping and serving Lord Siva, followers of Lord Siva become Siva themselves. They dress as Siva. If I wear the uniform of a policeman, put a cap on my head and hang a gun on my belt, will that make me a policeman? Yes, a fake one. So, you dress as Siva, put on a wig of dreadlocks, smear paint on your body and say that you are now Siva. Is this Siva? Sivji Maharaj took ganja, and he is also known as Nilkantha because he drank snake poison. So, if you say that you are a devotee of Lord Siva and you say that you can smoke ganja, then you should drink poison, too. Take poison and see what fun it is. Go to the end. Do you understand what I am saying? If you take ganja, do you think you can control yourselves and remain sober? You cannot – you become intoxicated and start behaving like madmen, rolling on the ground, etc. This is how people 'worship' Siva in this world. It is necessary to serve Lord Siva, with faith and devotion. 'O Sivji Maharaj, you are a great friend and devotee of Lord Krishna, please give some devotion to me. You are very powerful. Please, let me have devotion to your holy feet.' You must pray like this again and again, not only one day. This is not a prayer for Siva-ratri only. You must do it every day. We will leave this place, but you must continue coming here and every day come up the stairs of the temple and pay your obeisance to Lord Siva. This is a question of eternal devotion. If you are passing by and you stop and offer obeisance standing, with your shoes on (just by folding your palms), this is not an obeisance. You must come to the temple, climb the stairs and offer your obeisances nicely.
