The soul's identity is a servant of Lord Krishna. You know this.

‘কৃষ্ণ-নিত্যদাস’—জীব তাহা ভুলি’ গেল ।
এই দোষে মায়া তার গলায় বান্ধিল ॥

‘krsna-nitya-dasa’—jiva taha bhuli’ gela
ei dose maya tara galaya bandhila

‘Jiva souls forgot that they are eternal servants of Krishna. Because of this mistake, illusion threw its ropes around their necks.’

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 2.22.24)

We live and move in material, illusory bondage, we live as slaves of Maya because we forgot the Lord. We forget that we are eternal servants and maidservants of Lord Krishna, and as the result of this forgetfulness we now live suffering the agony of the threefold miseries: adhibhautik, adhidaivik, adhyatmik (miseries caused by other souls, by the nature and by one’s own mind). To get relief from this suffering, it is of paramount importance that Lord Krishna appears within the heart of every single living entity. This is not about showing off in front of others that you are celebrating Lord Krishna's appearance – Krishna must appear within the inner chamber of our hearts at every single second, at every single moment. Remembrance of Lord Krishna must arise within us at every moment. Whatever we do – whether we eat, lie down, sit, sleep or stay awake – we must always remember Lord Krishna. Remember this!

To achieve this, we must have devotion for the Lord, we must have pure love for the Lord and we must serve Lord Krishna. Until and unless devotion to Krishna comes to us, until and unless pure love for Lord Krishna comes to us, and until and unless we can take part in service to Lord Krishna, we will not be able to become reinstated in Krishna consciousness.

Every single one of us should take part in service to Lord Krishna. If Supreme Lord Sri Krishnachandra has not appeared in your heart, if you could not know Him, could not understand Him, could not get His association or darshan, if you never appreciated His service and never developed any feelings for Him in your life – then your life is passing in vain. You must come to realise this truth. Even if you have earned much wealth, even if you live surrounded by good friends and family, even if you have a poetic gift and earned much fame, reputation and knowledge – no matter how much you have achieved in your life – if you have not found the Lord, then all your life is void. It is necessary to come to realise God within you. You must dive deep into soul-searching and realise that the greatest possible attainment is to become filled with pure love for God – to allow your heart to become flooded with that kind of love. You must seat the Lord within your heart. You must let the Lord advent within your heart.

You come to a temple to celebrate Lord Krishna's appearance and make a festival for one day – this is not the point! You have a temple in your heart, and the Lord must appear within the temple of your heart. Lord Krishnachandra must be the dear, dearer, dearest Personality to you. He is not only dear to you, but He is the dearest, the dearmost Personality to you! 'In my life, my one and only dearest friend is Krishna! The only love I need in my life is love for Krishna. I do not know anybody else besides Krishna, I do not understand anybody else besides Krishna, I cannot know anybody else besides Krishna.'

Love for Him is the heartbeat of the soul. If you do not find the object of love to whom you could dedicate your whole self, your life passes in vain. This is the profound spiritual truth, and it is necessary to come to realise this truth.
