(8/9) World of Uncertainty His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
I was proofreading a book until 1 a.m. My eyes were closing, so I had to stop because otherwise mistakes can come. I lay down to sleep, I did not even have time to put off my light. Only when I felt cold, I woke up to put a blanket on... It is written in Sri Kalyan-kalpataru: "Jivana samapta kale kariba bhajan ebe kari grha-sukha (জীবন সমাপ্ত কালে করিব ভজন, এবে করি গৃহসুখ)—I will practise spiritual life at the end of my life, but now I will enjoy family life at home." Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur also writes:
শৈশব-যৌবনে, জড়সুখ-সঙ্গে,
saisava-yaxuvane, jada-sukha-sange, In my childhood and youth, I always indulged in material happiness and I have become habituated to bad things. Because of my own sins, this body has become an impediment to spiritual practice. When you are used to sleeping on thick mattresses and nice double beds, will you be able to sleep on the floor after that? Will you like sleeping on a simple wooden cot? You will be lying and thinking, "When will I go home and sleep on my nice double bed?" But when you leave this body, it will lie on a simple bed worth 200 rupees—people keep them ready lined on the street, and on some days, they will think, "Oh, we have not sold much—too few people have died today!" One time, when I went to buy flower garlands, I saw the seller kept a heap aside, and I asked him why he was keeping those flowers. The seller said, "These are for those who are taken to the crematorium—they put them on the dead body." Then I said, "Oh, so you probably hope that more people will die, then you will sell more flowers!" The man asked me, "Where did you learn such things?!" I said, "I am telling the truth!" [His Divine Grace laughs.] This is what "Jivana samapta kale kariba bhajan ebe kari grha-sukha (জীবন সমাপ্ত কালে করিব ভজন, এবে করি গৃহসুখ; I will practise spiritual life at the end of my life, but now I will enjoy family life at home)" means. I saw an ambulance car going the other day on the street. In the opposite direction, a man, together with his granddaughter, was holding his daughter-in-law by the arm, and when the ambulance turned around, they started forcefully pulling her into the car. The ambulance had no patients inside, it was empty. The woman began to shout, and her father-in-law was trying to push her into the car. Then, the ambulance driver, seeing that the woman was shouting in distress, turned round, ran over the old man and drove away. This is the world, and this is the material life in this world. You can never say when one is going to die... "Jivana samapta kale kariba bhajan ebe kari grha-sukha (জীবন সমাপ্ত কালে করিব ভজন, এবে করি গৃহসুখ; I will practise spiritual life at the end of my life, but now I will enjoy family life at home)." Intelligent people will never say this...
