When Srila Gurudev went to Mexico, he gave a very beautiful lecture. I have printed a new (Bengali) book from this lecture; you can all get a copy at the bookstall. In that book, I also printed this short lecture by Srila Prabhupad Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur. There was a festival going on at the temple, and a man came and asked Srila Prabhupad, ‘When are they going to feed beggars?’ Srila Prabhupad gave a very beautiful answer: you can get so many things at the temple, you can hear Hari-katha – but what kind of pauper are you? Are you poor because you lack food (bhojan), or are you poor because you lack spiritual life (bhajan)? When you tell people that there will be food, huge crowds come (you can see that the nat-mandir is so full now that there is no free place left); but if you say that there is not going to be any prasad, the nat-mandir will never become full. It means that we are all beggars for food – we are all hungry for food. Srila Prabhupad expressed it very beautifully. Read his lecture. The language is difficult: not everybody has the capacity to understand Srila Prabhupad’s language, but you must try to read it. He says there: my dear, what kind of pauper are you? Do you need only food? Are you tongue-poor? Have you come to this world just to satisfy your desires and senses, or have you come only to bring benefit to your soul? Which is true? We do not think about the benefit of our souls – we always think about satisfying our senses (giving pleasure to our tongues, mouths, minds and other senses). We have no attachment or love for what great souls say. We only want food! What is the need to come to the temple then? If you want to come to the temple for the benefit of your soul, then you can come, but do not come as a beggar for food – come as a beggar for spiritual life! Always remember this. Anyhow, our time is short today, so I will not take much time. There are other sannyasis present here, and I would like to request them to speak about the glories of Srila Gurudev first. [After the honourable dham-bhusana sannyasis of Sri Mayapur Dham speak, His Divine Grace continues his address.] I thought at first that because of the lockdown we will lose many devotees, but I can see now that there is no space in the nat-mandir – the entire hall is filled. I know some of you cannot even enter or get a seat at the back. What can we do? On the one hand, by my misfortune, I left our temple in Kolerganj, Nabadwip, and came here; but, on the other hand, you have all come here to give me your mercy, and that is my great fortune. I am praying to you all for your mercy. I will briefly speak about Srila Gurudev now. There are so many things that can be said about Gurudev, and it is actually not possible for such a lowly soul as myself to speak about his glories and qualities… Our Gurudev has a pranam-mantra composed by our Param Gurudev, Om Vishnupad Srila Bhakti Raksak Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj. It had never been seen anywhere that a guru would write his own disciple’s pranam-mantra, but Srila Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj did that – he personally composed my Gurudev’s pranam-mantra. He wrote:
গুর্ব্বাভীষ্টসুপূরকং গুরুগণৈরাশীষসংভূষিতং
gurvvabhista-supurakam guru-ganair asisa-sambhusitam ‘I offer my obeisance to him who perfectly fulfils his gurudev’s most cherished desires; who is fully adorned with the blessings of his gurudev’s associates; who is expert in all conceivable and inconceivable aspects of Vedic knowledge; who is a pre-eminent follower of Srila Rupa Goswami Prabhu’s line; who is known as “Govinda” (Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj); whose beautiful, effulgent, exalted form is suffused with pure devotion; who is the guru of the entire universe; and who is the giver of the seed of divine love for the Supreme Lord.’ ‘Guru-ganair asisa-sambhusitam’: he is fully adorned with the blessings of his gurudev and the entire guru-varga. ‘Chintyachintya-samasta-veda-nipunam’: he is expert in all conceivable and inconceivable knowledge, his knowledge is beyond even the Vedas. ‘Sri-rupa-panthanugam’: he preaches the conception of Sri Rupanuga sampradaya. ‘Govindabhidham ujjvalam’: he manifests himself in a very radiant way in this world, bearing the name Govinda Dev-Goswami. Srila Sridhar Maharaj said, ‘I will not be able to go abroad to preach, neither have I ever been able to go there, but Govinda Maharaj will preach my words and the words of Srila Prabhupad in this universe.’ This is the divine reassurance Srila Sridhar Maharaj gave in Srila Gurudev’s pranam-mantra…
