His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Hooghly District, preaching programme,
20 February 2019, evening, part 5
Translated from Bengali

Who is called a disciple? Do you think that one becomes a disciple just by taking the mantra or the initiation? No. Disciples are those who place the instruction of their guru on their heads and follow it to a T. This is such a high conception! This is the conception given to us by Srila Prabhupad Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur. Our Gurudev said that disciples (sisya) are those who can digest their guru's disciplining (sasan mane); and Srila Prabhupad said that disciples are those who place their guru's order on their heads and follow it unswervingly. We must always keep this in mind. It is not necessary to think about anything else, to practise meditation, and so on. Gurudev has said this, and this is the final word for us. We do not need to go and look at what interpretations the Vedas give, etc. It is not necessary to look this side, that side or in any other direction.

When our guru says something, we accept it with chastity – we do not come to judge it. We do not have the qualification to do that. 'Yogyata vichare kichhu nahi pai tomara karuna sara (যোগ্যতা বিচারে কিছু নাহি পাই তোমার করুণা সার). I find no quality or qualification within me – your mercy is everything.' 'Sakti-buddhi-hina ami ati dina, kara more atmasatha (শক্তিবুদ্ধিহীন আমি অতি দীন কর মোরে আত্মসাথ). I have no strength, no intelligence, I am very poor. Please hijack me!' Please hijack me! I have no power, I have no brain... Gurudev, please hijack me and use me wherever and however you want – wherever you keep me, in whichever situation you place me, I will be happy with that. This is what we always sing in the kirtan.

sakti-buddhi-hina, ami ati dina,
kara more atmasatha
yogyata vichare, kichhu nahi pai,
tomara karuna sara
karuna na haile, kandiya kandiya,
prana na rakhiba ara

'I have no strength, no intelligence, I am very poor. Please hijack me! I find no quality or qualification within me – your mercy is everything. If I do not get your mercy, I will simply weep to death.'

This crying must not be just to show tears in front of others, to impress others.

You must keep away from the so-called kirtans and whatever else people do in this world! We must always be one-pointed devotees: it means that whatever our gurudev tells us to do, we will do that without asking a thousand questions or bargaining.

I have told you many times that when you do a fire sacrifice, you cannot put first one spoon of ghee and then one spoon of water. You put a spoonful of ghee, then a spoonful of water; then again a spoonful of ghee and a spoonful of water. You can never make a fire sacrifice like that. You must keep putting ghee through the sacrifice, until the very end. We must not water it down. Always be honest. Always tell the truth to your gurudev. Even if you make some offence, tell him about it openly. Always be honest and open. Gurudev always told this. On the other hand, if a guru cannot also speak to his disciple openly, then this is not a guru. The guru must speak straightforward. There must not be any crookery (gojamil, গোঁজামিল, lit. 'cooking up the accounts'). We must be clear-cut.

I keep telling you that you must always practise sravan and kirtan. Whatever you do (whatever work you may have), wake up early in the morning and chant kirtans, and when you get back in the evening, chant kirtans again. Even when you are working, you can chant kirtan. Learn them by heart and chant (actually, if you keep chanting them regularly, you will automatically remember them). If you always chant Nitai's kirtan, you will always see Nitai's form in front of you. It is necessary to have mercy for that. But if you do service, you will have mercy.

Lacking Strength or Lacking Effort?
'We must understand how many hours of our time we waste—spend on ourselves, on our own enjoyment—and how many hours we spend on practising. We have come here for service—we have not come for enjoyment. This is our promise.'

If you do not practise properly yourself and tell others to practise, your preaching will not work.
