(1/1) Spiritual Birth and Death

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Preaching programme in Hooghly district,
2 March 2019, evening
Translated from Bengali

[After reciting Sri Jaya Dhvani, His Divine Grace makes a brief introductory address.]

Please do not speak – only Krishna-kirtan must come out of your mouths. I have told you earlier that I have not come here to chant kirtan – I have come to make so that you all chant kirtan. You must chant kirtan yourselves. This is not some hired band that comes to sing and entertain people for fifty rupees. What those who come to sing for money sing is not kirtan – they only make offences to the Holy Name. Why do they come to sing kirtans? To get money. But why do sadhus sing kirtan? To bring to this path the souls who have turned away from the Lord. They bring them to this path and make them chant the Holy Name.

There are a few fortunate souls here who have got the Holy Name and chant it now. The Holy Name revealed Himself to them, so they started living following all the rules and regulations. This is what we come to give, and this is what you are to get. We do not come to take anything from anybody – rather, we come to give something to others. What do we come to give? We come to help you in the best way possible. We come to give you such help after getting which you will not need any other help in this world. By getting this help, you will not have to suffer from births, deaths, old age and diseases anymore.

You are born, and when you are born, you have to die; after that, when you die, you have to be born again. You do not realise how painful birth is because you do not remember it, but when we were in our mothers' wombs, we lived in a terrible environment. We lived upside down, with our heads down and legs up (when children are born, first their heads come out, is it not so?). We lived like that, all squeezed inside, suffering hellish miseries, bitten by worms and other insects. At that time, we cried and called out to the Lord, 'O Lord! Please let me out!' The Lord said, 'I will let you out, but you will forget Me once you are out of here...' Then, we make a promise, 'No, I will not forget You!' But do we keep our word?

When we get out and the Lord gives us a house, a room, money, children, a wife or husband, and we get busy with all this. Hundred percent of people are busy with all this. The truth is that we forgot the Lord. But He is the one who keeps us alive in this world – He provides our food, clothes and everything else. We were born as cows, goats, sheep, cats, dogs, snakes and other creatures before; now, having crossed all those births, we were given a human birth. But we are wasting this life! That is why sadhus go house to house and tell you, ‘Krsna bala, sange chala, ei matra bhiksa chai (কৃষ্ণ বল, সঙ্গে চল, এই মাত্র ভিক্ষা চাই). I am begging you for one thing only: come with us and chant the Holy Name of Krishna! Come with me! I will take you to your home! This is not your house.’

You think that your father has built this house, so you are the owner of the house now. How long are you going to be the owner? You will leave this world, too. After that, your son will become the owner, then your grandson, and so on. One after another, you will all leave this world. All of us will leave this world, but the Lord was, is and will always be there. When we came to this world, we came naked and empty-handed – we did not bring anything with us; and when we have to leave, we will leave in the same way as we came. Nobody will even give you a set of clothes when they take you to the crematorium and burn your body. But why did we come to this world? What should we do in this life? You cannot know this unless you come to a genuine guru. A genuine guru can tell you about it because he is the Lord's own. The Lord Himself comes to this world as a guru, and when He comes, He teaches us all this. This is the real purpose.

Everybody here has a house – somebody's house is here, somebody's house is there, everybody seated here has a house. But this house where you live is only a rented place. You will stay there only as long as your rent is valid, and once your rent expires, you will have to leave. We all will have to leave this world one day, we will not stay here long. This life and this world are temporary.

So, we must always remember this. 'Kothay chhilam, hethay elam, kothay yabo bhavi nai (কোথায় ছিলাম, হেথায় এলাম, কোথায় যাব ভাবি নাই). Where was I? Where have I come? And where will I go after that? It never crosses my mind.' Gurus and Vaishnavs come to you to take you to your real home. Where is your own home? In Goloka Vrindavan. We must come back to where we come from. But if we do not chant the Holy Name, then we will have to be born as dogs, frogs, cats, goats, pigs again and live filthy lives.

That is why the Lord has sent us to this world. Therefore, we pray to you all: please listen to a few kirtans carefully. Do not speak, do not disturb me. After we chant kirtans, I will speak more.

Jay Srila Guru Maharaj ki jay.

[The recording breaks.]

'You do Vaishnav seva and become proud, 'I am spending money', 'I am doing this', 'I am doing that'—this kind of mentality can come, but our mood should be, 'I am not doing anything', 'I cannot do anything.''

You put tilak on and show to the whole world that you are a great Vaishnav, but in the meantime you are hidingly doing some nonsense. Gora can catch you, thief!
