(4) Mahaprabhu: Sweeping Mercy
His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
ambu-linga bhuvanesa kapotesa pati (62) He is the Lord of Ambu-linga, (63) Bhuvanesvar and (64) Kapotesvar, (65) He is an ascetic who rejoices to have the darshan of Ksir-Chor Gopinath and (66) Gopal.
nirddandi-sannyasi sarvabhauma-krpamaya (67) He is a staff-less monk, (68) He is merciful to Sarvabhauma, (69) He rejoices as He tastes His own blissful joy, (70) He is the shelter of all happiness.
purata-sundara vasudeva-trana-karta (71) He is the beautiful Golden Lord, (72) He gives relief to Vasudev Vipra, (73) He is the friend of Ramananda Ray, (74) He robs the family of Venkata Bhatta of all miseries. Mahaprabhu took the darshan of the Lingaraj Bhuvaneswar temple. The Lord Himself came there. He is the Master of Lingaraj, the Master of the whole universe, but He came to that temple for darshan. Garbed as a sannyasi, He also went to see Lord Ksir-chor Gopal. When we went to Srila Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya's house in Vidyanagar, we spoke about his pastimes – when Mahaprabhu took sannyas, He bestowed His mercy on Srila Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya. After that, He travelled to South India where He met Sri Ramananda Ray and a brahman called Vasudev Vipra. Vasudev Vipra had leprosy and he tolerated so much that when insects fell out of his sores, he thought, 'This body will go away, so what is it to me?' – he picked those insects up and put them back into his sores. This is how great his power of tolerance was. When Mahaprabhu met him, He embraced the brahman and rescued him.
bauddha-jaina-mayavadi-kutarka-khandana (75) He breaks the arguments of Buddhists, (76) Jains and (77) mayavadis, (78) He is the saviour of South India, (79) He rescues devotional scriptures. Buddhist sannyasis were envious of Mahaprabhu and even put some bad things into His vegetable dishes, but then a crow came, picked up the plate with that dish and threw it on the head of that Buddhist! Then, the sannyasi realised that it was not an ordinary matter, so he asked Mahaprabhu forgiveness and begged Him for mercy. Srila Janardan Maharaj: When that plate fell on his head, there was a big sound, like, 'Don-n-n-ng!' And then all the Buddist disciples were very disturbed, thinking, 'Oh, he is our acharya, what has happened to him?!' Mahaprabhu said, 'Speak this mantra into your acharya's ear and he will come round.' When the disciples did that (when they spoke the mantra into that sannyasi's ear), they became gurus of their acharya! Yes, they all became devotees of Mahaprabhu in the end. You can find this pastime described in the scriptures. Mahaprabhu also went to Alarnath:
আলাল-দর্শনানন্দী রথাগ্র-নর্ত্তক ।
alala-darsananandi rathagra-nartaka (80) He rejoices to see Alalnath (Alarnath), (81) He dances in front of the chariots during Ratha-yatra, (82) He delivers Gajapati (King Prataparudra), (83) He rescues Devananda Pandit.
kuliya-prakase dusta paduyara trana (84) He appears in Kulia and delivers naughty students, (85) He is the friend of Rupa and (86) Sanatan, (87) He is the life and soul of all living entities. Mahaprabhu rescued King Prataparudra and Devananda Pandit. Devananda Pandit was a very big preacher of Bhagavatam. Although he preached about Bhagavatam, a scripture about devotion, he did not prohibit his disciples to speak about knowledge and liberation. Everybody sat at his lectures like yogis, immersed in meditation (nobody was actually moved by the talks about Lord Krishna), but when Srivas Pandit became suddenly overwhelmed with divine feelings about Lord Krishna and Devananda Pandit's disciples kicked him out, he did not object. That was his offence at Srivas Pandit's holy feet. In the end, Mahaprabhu forgave him and gave him His mercy: five years after that story happened, when Mahaprabhu came back to Nabadwip, Devananda Pandit asked Mahaprabhu forgiveness. Question: Maharaj! I would like to hear from [Tyagi] Maharaj about asta-sattvik vikar. Oh my God! We do not talk about such things. It is a festival today. We are observing Sri Jagannath Misra's ananda utsav in honour of Sri Chaitanyadev's appearance yesterday, so today we are celebrating this. If you have questions, you can ask them later. All right? Asta-sattvik vikar? I recently was in Ganga-sagar, and there is one devotee who took initiation but he always goes to listen to sahajiya kirtans and does not follow properly all the rules and regulations, a hodgepodge devotee. So, that man asked me, 'Gurudev, who among gods stays inside Tulasi leaf?' I told him that instead of thinking about all those things, he should chant the Holy Name, it would be better for him. One time, a foreign devotee asked Gurudev tell about Radha-Krishna's pastimes, and Gurudev replied, 'If you hear those pastimes, you will become pregnant.' I remember that. Some people have so much audacity... So, 'kuliya-prakase dusta paduyara trana': when Mahaprabhu came to Kulia, He forgave all the naughty people who harassed Him.
