(2/16) Pillars of Service Mood

Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur says: 'Yatha Vaishnav, tatha tirtha (যথা বৈষ্ণব, তথা তীর্থ). A holy place is present wherever there is a Vaishnav. Mana, tumi tirthe sada rata (মন, তুমি তীর্থে সদা রত). O mind! You are always attached to places of pilgrimage.'

Your heart must become a place of pilgrimage! You can come to live in Nabadwip, but your mind, your heart stays at home and worries about the gourd growing in your garden. This is not what living in Nabadwip is. You come to Vrindavan, but after a while start thinking, 'Oh, it is so cold, but nobody is giving me a blanket or shoes... I need a dhoti, but nobody is giving one to me. It is winter now, so I need a shawl, but nobody is giving one to me. I should just get to a store and get one for myself.' I scolded one person only yesterday. Because he went to the store in the afternoon, he did not open the temple on time. After taking prasad, he went to sleep, and when we all came for the arati in the evening, we saw that he was only opening the temple then, which means that he had not offered any fruit in the late afternoon. I asked him, 'Why? Why is your service mood like that?' He said, 'Oh, I went to a store...' You go to a store, that is all right, but why do you sleep then? You can go to the store quickly, return in time and get ready to open the temple (wash your mouth, feet and hands, etc.). Why do you sleep in the afternoon then? I told him, 'You are not fit to do puja.' He began to cry...

He has no sincerity. Gurudev told three things: we must have sincerity, we must be seekers and we must have chastity. We must be sincere seekers, and we must have chastity. Do not behave like prostitutes. You see something and you want to try it and see its taste; then you see something else and you go there to try its taste. You roam everywhere seeking different tastes – you are only wasting your time! But if you have a chaitya-guru in your heart – if you have one-pointed determination and service mood – then the Lord (through the chaitya-guru) will bring you to your mahanta-guru. In that case, you will not have any problem.

It is said in the scriptures:

রাধা-ভজনে যদি মতি নাহি ভেলা ।
কৃষ্ণ-ভজন তব অকারণ গেলা ॥

radha-bhajane yadi mati nahi bhela
krsna-bhajana tava akarana gela

'If you did not become devoted to the worship of Srimati Radharani, your worship of Krishna was in vain.'

'Radhara dasira Krsna sarva-vede bole (রাধার দাসীর কৃষ্ণ সর্ব্ব বেদে বলে). Krishna is the property of the maidservants of Srimati Radharani. All Vedas say this.'

First, become a devotee of Mahaprabhu. In other words, first learn to be a devotees' servant, then your guru's servant, then only can you hope to be a servant of Krishna. Krishna Himself says, 'Those who say that they are My devotees are not My devotees; it is the devotees of My devotees who are My actual devotees.' Krishna Himself says this. Always remember this!
