(3/16) Tongue's Attachment
His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
We always think about you. How much more time do you have? Is there any time? The problem is material attachment. There is no time for all this.
উঠরে উঠরে ভাই আর ত সময় নাই
uthare uthare bhai ara ta samaya nai 'Wake up, wake up, brother! There is no time! "Worship Krishna!" they call out loudly.' (Acharya Vandana) There is no time! Worship Krishna! Chant Krishna's Names! 'Akantha kariya bhojan, sara dina kara nama-sankirtana (আকণ্ঠ করিয়া ভোজন সারা দিন কর নাম-সংকীর্ত্তন). Eat up to your neck and chant the Holy Name the whole day.'
যদি আমা'-প্রতি স্নেহ থাকে সবাকার ।
yadi ama'-prati sneha thake sabakara 'If you have any love and affection for Me, then only say 'Krishna' – do not say anything except "Krishna".' (Sri Chaitanya-bhagavata, 2.28.27)
কি শয়নে, কি ভোজনে, কিবা জাগরণে ।
ki sayane, ki bhojane, kiba jagarane 'Whether you are lying down, eating or waking up, incessantly think about Krishna and chant the Name of Krishna with your mouth.' (Sri Chaitanya-bhagavat, 2.28.28) Always speak less. What need is there to talk much anyway?
গ্রাম্যকথা না শুনিবে, গ্রাম্যবার্ত্তা না কহিবে ।
gramya-katha na sunibe, gramya-varta na kahibe 'Do not listen to village talks, do not speak about village news. Do not eat fancy food, do not wear fancy clothes. Do not expect honour to yourself and give all respect to others. Always chant the Holy Name of Krishna and serve Radha-Krishna in your mind.' (Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 3.6.236-237) Do not wear fancy clothes, and do not eat fancy food. We did not come to this world to dress well and to eat well. No. This is not our life! We are eating so much fancy food now, but when we were pigs, we ate so much of our favourite food – stool. In all those previous births, we have been eating our favourite food. When we were elephants, we finished so many banana trees. When we were pigs, we ate so much stool. Is there anything else that pigs love more than stool? Will a pig eat paneer rasa? If you bring a bucket full of paneer rasa to a pig and ask the pig to eat it, will it eat it? It will not – it will always choose stool over any other 'fancy' food you may bring it. So, we have been eating so much of our favourite food all these lives, and even now when we are born in this human body, we are still roaming around looking for tasty things. 'Where shall I go to eat some pilau?', 'Where shall I go to eat some biryani?' – we go place to place like this, always looking for nice food.
জিহ্বার লালসে যেই ইতি-উতি ধায় ।
jihvara lalase yei iti-uti dhaya 'One who is subservient to the tongue and who thus goes here and there, devoted to the genitals and the belly, cannot attain Krishna.' (Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 3.6.227) Our devotion is destroyed because of this greed of our tongues. Our devotion becomes ripped out with its root. 'Asat-sanga sada tyaga chhada anya gita-raga (অসৎ-সঙ্গ সদা ত্যাগ, ছাড় অন্য গীতরাগ). Give up bad association, do not listen to the material songs and music' (Sri Prema-bhakti-chandrika, 15). Some people wonder why I do not eat at other people's houses. Because when somebody serves me food, that person has some material desires inside them, and when they give me food, those desires will come to me and gradually destroy devotion in my life. That is why we must never accept any food from non-devotees. Do not take anything except for prasad (offered food; merciful remnants of the Lord's food). If you are in a situation when you have to take something outside, then remember the Lord and gurudev mentally and take it. If you fall into great danger and have to take something at somebody's house, then take some water. When you are travelling, you may not always have an opportunity to make a proper offering to the Lord or you feel thirsty and need to drink some water – in such cases, you can get something, remember the Lord and gurudev (you should say, 'Gurudev, I am offering this at your holy feet and taking your prasad now') and take it. 'Prasada-seva karite haya sakala prapancha-jaya (প্রসাদ-সেবা করিতে হয় সকল প্রপঞ্চ জয়). By honouring the Lord's prasad I shall conquer all worldly illusions' (Saranagati). This prapancha (material world) is comprised of five diseases: avidya (ignorance), asmita (false identification), raga (misdirected love), dvesa (aversion to anything that goes against one's enjoyment), and abhinivesa (being unable to give up unfavourable habits). In this world, if you want to get cured from some disease, you have to see a doctor. If the doctor genuinely loves you, he will never dance to your tune – he will tell you to stop taking harmful food and to keep a healthy diet. For example, if you have diabetes, he will tell you not to eat sweets and potato. You can say, 'Doctor, I have a lot of money, I can buy any medicine. But I cannot live without sweets.' If the doctor loves you, he will say, 'I do not want a patient like you! You only want to eat your favourite food, but I cannot tell you to take it.' There are many gurus roaming this world who will tell you that you can eat anything you want (fish, meat, etc.), do anything you want. It does not work like that. If you drink milk, you get vitamins; but along with milk, you also drink alcohol or if you smoke or chew tobacco, then that alcohol or tobacco will destroy all benefit from drinking milk.
