(6) Our Seva-Puja

I have told you just now that our minds are always fickle – there are always unwanted thoughts (anarathas) coming to it. We are not free from unwanted, unspiritual elements, so many kinds of thoughts come to our minds. How can you fight this? By chanting kirtan loudly, by chanting the Holy Name loudly. Accept what is favourable to devotion and reject what is not favourable to devotion. You think that you can take tobacco and drink milk, but you can never get any benefit like this because tobacco will destroy whatever vitamins you get by drinking milk. So, you cannot chant the Holy Name and at the same time also do wrong, atrocious things – it does not work like this. We must forget all ego and pride and become very humble.

Sri Gurupadpadma could not come here himself, but he vested some power in me and sent me here. Through that power, all the temples are still running to this day. In one way or another, with the help of devotees' funds, I am still continuing to arrange everything for devotees. Despite all and any difficulties, I am still with you all – as long as I am alive, I will always stay with you all. Even if I have to stay beneath a tree, I will still stay with you all. We must live always thinking about it.

Please come to the temple. I will give a class tomorrow also – come, listen to the class and take prasad. Do not worry about anything. This is your temple. I am always trying to protect you all – so many court cases, so many obstacles, so much danger and trouble comes, but I am trying to protect you all from this so that you can practise Krishna consciousness and serve the Lord. This is our seva-puja, our service and our worship.

Always remember this.

Srila Lochan Das Thakur says:

নিতাই মোর জীবন ধন, নিতাই মোর জাতি ।
নিতাই বিহনে মোর আর নাহি গতি ॥১॥

nitai mora jivana dhana, nitai mora jati
nitai bihane mora ara nahi gati [1]

‘Nitai is my life, my treasure. Nitai is my family. I do not know anything except Nitai (He is my sole refuge).’

সংসার-সুখের মুখে তুলে দিব ছাই ।
নগরে মাগিয়া খাবো গাইয়া নিতাই ॥২॥

samsara-sukhera mukhe tule diba chhai
nagare magiya khabo gaiya nitai [2]

‘I will throw ash into the face of material happiness and, chanting Nitai’s Name, will live on whatever I get by begging in town.’

যে দেশে নিতাই নাই, সে দেশে না যাব ।
নিতাই-বিমুখ জনার মুখ না হেরিব ॥৩॥

ye dese nitai nai, se dese na yaba
nitai-vimukha janara mukha na heriba [3]

‘I will never go anywhere where there is no Nitai – I do not want to see the face of anyone who is averse to Nitai!’

গঙ্গা যাঁর পদ-জল, হর শিরে ধরে ।
হেন নিতাই না ভজিয়া দুঃখ পেয়ে মরে ॥৪॥

ganga yanra pada-jala, hara sire dhare
hena nitai na bhajiya duhkha peye mare [4]

‘Lord Siva (Hara) holds on his head the water of the Ganges that washes His feet. Those who do not worship this Nitai live and die in misery.’

লোচন বলে মোর নিতাই যেবা নাহি মানে । অনল ভেজাও তার মাঝ-মুখখানে ॥৫॥

lochana bale mora nitai yeba nahi mane
anala bhejao tara majha-mukha-khane [5]

Lochan says, ‘Throw fire into the mouths of those who do not revere my Nitai!’

The other day somebody came to take initiation and I gave him the name Lochan Das. The man asked me, 'What is the meaning of this name?' 'Lochan' means lotus-eyed. Srila Lochan Das Thakur was Sriman Nityananda Prabhu's devotee. Many of the kirtans that we sing were written by him.

নিতাই গুণমণি আমার নিতাই গুণমণি ।
আনিয়া প্রমের বন্যা ভাসাল অবনী ॥১॥

nitai gunamani amara nitai gunamani
aniya premera vanya bhasala avani [1]

‘O Nitai, jewel of all good qualities! My dear Nitai, jewel of all good qualities! You brought a flood of divine love and inundated the whole world.’

প্রমবন্যা লয়ে নিতাই আইল গৌড় দেশে ।
ডুবিল ভকতগণ দীনহীন ভাসে ॥২॥

prema-vanya laye nitai aila gauda dese
dubila bhakata-gana dina-hina bhase [2]

‘Nitai brought a flood of divine love to the land of Gauda (Bengal). Devotees dived into it, and the poor and lowly floated on its surface.’

দীনহীন পতিত পামর নাহি বাছে ।
ব্রহ্মার দুর্ল্লভ প্রম সবাকারে যাচে ॥৩॥

dina-hina patita pamara nahi bachhe
brahmara durlabha prema sabakare yache [3]

‘Whether one is destitute, bereft, fallen or a sinner – He did not mind anyone because everyone is hankering for that divine love, which is rare even for Lord Brahma to attain.’

আবদ্ধ করুণাসিন্ধু কাটিয়া মুহান ।
ঘরে ঘরে বুলে প্রম-অমিয়ার বান ॥৪॥

abaddha karuna-sindhu katiya muhana
ghare ghare bule prema-amiyara vana [4]

‘He cut a canal into the ocean of mercy that had been kept contained, and the flood of nectarean divine love spread to each and every home.’

লোচন বলে হেন নিতাই যেবা না ভজিল ।
জানিয়া শুনিয়া সেই আত্মঘাতী হৈল ॥৫॥

lochan bale hena nitai yeba na bhajila
janiya suniya sei atmaghati haila [5]

Lochan says, ‘Those who have not worshipped this Nitai have consciously committed suicide.’
