(2/4) Arrival of Dvadasatila's Madan
His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
There is another pastime related to Sri Dvadasatila and to how Srila Sanatan Goswami Prabhu got his Deity of Sri Madan-mohan. When Srila Sanatan Goswami lived in Vrindavan, he lived by begging. At that time, all the great buildings you see today were not there. It was a forest. One time, when he went begging to Mathura, he came to a house of some wealthy people. Seeing the house, he told the husband and wife who lived there, 'You have a very beautiful house, and you are also very nice, beautiful people but how come there is no baby in your house?' 'We have been married for twelve years now, but we still have not been able to have a child,' the couple replied. 'We have visited many tantric sadhus, but we still have not been able to have a child.' 'But you live in Mathura! This is Krishna birthplace, so you must pray to Krishna!' 'Oh, we have never thought of doing this. But seeing you we feel that you are the Supreme Lord Himself, so we are praying to you: please let us have a child.' 'Pray to Lord Sri Krishna, He will arrange everything,' Sanatan Goswami replied. Soon after that the wife became pregnant and nine months later gave birth to a baby boy. Whenever Srila Sanatan Goswami came to Mathura for begging, he would visit the family to see the child. He was very affectionate to the boy and liked to come and see how he was doing, how much he had grown, and so on. He also gave him the name Madan. Years went by and Madan grew up a little. He also loved Srila Sanatan Goswami very much. Whenever Srila Sanatan Goswami came to their house, he would climb on his lap. When it was chaturmasya time, Srila Sanatan Goswami had a long beard, and the boy would pull at his beard playfully. He would pull his sikha, climb on his shoulders. He would play with Srila Sanatan Goswami very lovingly. One day, Madan's mother scolded him, 'Hey, Mahan, leave Baba alone! He has come walking from so far, let him rest! Why are you pestering him? Or do you want to go with him? Go then, go!' Then, turning to Srila Sanatan Goswami, she said, 'O Sadhu Baba, this boy loves you so much, you should just take him with you!' Then she went to the kitchen and got busy. In the meantime, having taken some rest, Srila Sanatan Goswami started his back way to Vrindavan. Srila Sanatan Goswami had walked for a while when he suddenly heard the sound of anklebells behind him. He turned round and saw Madan walking behind him! 'Madan? You? Go home, your mother must be looking for you!' 'But Mother said that I must go with you!' 'What are you talking about? She loves you very much – she had waited for twelve years to have you, you cannot leave her.' 'Mother said that you must take me with you, so I want to stay with you.' 'Stop it, otherwise I will not come to your house again,' Srila Sanatan Goswami said. In the meantime, Madan's mother finished cooking and realised that Madan was not at home. She went to the pond near the house and asked somebody there if they had seen Madan. There, they told her, 'Yes, I saw him walking behind a sadhu a while ago.' Hearing this, she began to panic. She ran as fast as she could to catch up with Srila Sanatan Goswami. When she finally reached them, she saw them standing and arguing on the road. She cried, 'Madan! Madan! Madan! Come home! Come quick, come!' Madan started to run from her, so she could not catch him. They ran and ran, and when she finally caught the boy by the hand, Madan turned into a Deity! She was perplexed, 'What am I going to do now?' She tried to move the Deity to take Him home, but she could not even lift Him. Then, she turned to Srila Sanatan Goswami and told him, 'Do what you want with Him. Take Him with you...' Madan-mohan was very heavy, but when Srila Sanatan Goswami touched Him, He became as light as cork, and Srila Sanatan Goswami could bring Him to Dvadasatila.
