(3/3) 'Where Will I Sleep?'
His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
When Srila Sanatan Goswami took Madan-mohan with him, he told Him, 'You are a child from a royal house. You are used to eating curd, butter, ghee, paneer and other nice things, but I live by begging. I get two rotis and whatever else people give me, so do not expect any opulent meals from me...' One day, when Srila Sanatan Goswami Prabhu went begging, it happened so that he could not get anything anywhere. When you go begging, as a rule, nobody in Vrindavan gives you money; people give only some simple food: one–two rotis or something like that. So, that day, he only managed to get some flour from a lady. Then Srila Sanatan Goswami came back to Madan-mohan. He did not have any cookware, so he just mixed the flour with some water, squashed it into a patty and threw it into fire. Taking the roti-like patty out of fire, he gave it to Madan-mohan and said, 'Here, eat this. You have come to stay here, so eat whatever is there.' Madan-mohan started to eat. Then, He said, 'Well, it is half-burnt, but it is not a problem... Only if you could just add some salt to it...' 'Now You want some salt?! Go then, go back home.' 'No, no, do not kick Me out. I will eat without salt.' Finishing His rotis, Madan-mohan said, 'So, where am I going to sleep?' 'Huh? Where are You going to sleep? Here, under the tree! As I told you, You are a child from a royal family, so go back to Your home and sleep nicely there!' 'All right, all right, do not scold Me. Listen, if I make a house for Myself, would you mind it?' Madan-mohan asked. 'If You can do it Yourself, then do. It is Your matter. I stay under a tree.' In those days, there were no shops – people would bring goods on barges or boats and sell them from there. So, one day, one wealthy merchant's barge came to Vrindavan and happened to have got stuck in the sandy shore of the Yamuna. The strongest men came to help move it, they tried using bulls and horses, but no matter how hard they tried, they could not not move it. When the evening came, the merchant decided to wait and went to sleep. Suddenly Madan-mohan came to him in a dream and said: 'Uncle, I know how to move your barge.' 'You do? How?' 'Go to Dvadasatila, there is one sadhu living there. His name is Sanatan Goswami. Go to him. If he touches your barge, it will move.' In the morning, the man woke up and went straight to Srila Sanatan Goswami. 'Prabhu, please come with me. My barge is stuck, I need your help.' 'I am an old man, what can I do? I have heard that so many people tried to move it all together, but they could not.' 'No, no, please come with me.' 'Well, since you want it so much, I will come.' As soon as Srila Sanatan Goswami touched the barge, the barge moved easily into the water. The merchant was very happy. 'Prabhu, I am so happy,' he told Srila Sanatan Goswami. 'I see that you live under a tree, can I make a house for you?' 'What are you talking about? If I stay in a house, I will become attached to material things. I am happy to live under a different tree every day.' 'Oh, all right. If you do not need a house, can I make one for Madan-mohan?' 'If it is for Him, you can do as you like.' Then the merchant built a big temple for Madan-mohan on top of Dvadasatila.
