(4/4) Srila Sanatan Goswami's Wealth
His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
I will tell you about one more pastime and then finish for today. One time, a man came to Srila Sanatan Goswami from Mankar in Bengal. The man's name was Jivan Chakravarti, and he was a big devotee of Lord Siva. Once, Lord Siva came to Jivan Chakravarti in a dream and said, 'Jivan, you have been worshipping me for a long time. What boon would you like to get from me?' 'My daughter has grown up, she is more than eighteen already, but I cannot arrange her wedding because we do not have money. I want to get some money... If you could arrange for me to come into some fortune, I would be very happy.' 'All right. I do not have wealth myself, but you can go to Vrindavan. There is a sadhu called Sanatan Goswami living there. If you approach him, you will certainly get wealth from him.' So, Jivan Chakravarti started walking from Mankar to Vrindavan. Upon his arrival, he asked somebody, 'Where does Sanatan Goswami stay?' He was directed to the Dvadasatila Hill. 'Prabhu, are you Sanatan Goswami?' he asked Srila Sanatan Goswami there. 'Yes, I am,' Srila Sanatan Goswami Prabhu replied. 'You are? Really?' 'Why can you not believe it?' 'Well, I come from a poor house, but I see that you use a clay pot for water and you eat from a clay plate. Seeing you, I am thinking that I live better than you – at least we have some cookware. Sivji Maharaj has sent me to you, but you do not have anything...' 'Who sent you?' 'Lord Siva...' 'Lord Siva? Why would he send you to me?!' 'He said I could get wealth from you. My daughter has grown up, but I cannot arrange her marriage because I do not have any wealth. So, Lord Siva sent me to you.' 'There must have been some mistake. Where will I have wealth from? I do not even have a house.' 'Yes, I am also thinking so. There must have been a mistake.' Jivan Chakravarti walked away, but then suddenly Srila Sanatan Goswami called him back, 'Hey, listen! Wait! Come back! Come back!' 'Prabhu, you have called me?' 'Oh, I have remembered that the other day I was bathing in the Yamuna and I found a touchstone that turns everything into gold. I threw it away somewhere on the sandy bank. Go and look for it – if you find it, it will solve your problem.' Jivan Chakravarti went to the Yamuna, looked for the stone but could not find it. He came back to Srila Sanatan Goswami. 'You again?' 'Prabhu, I have not found it.' 'Oh, all right. Let me go with you then. Come.' They went together to the Yamuna, and Srila Sanatan Goswami found the touchstone. Jivan Chakravarti had an iron kavach on his arm, and when he touched the stone to his kavach, the kavach turned into gold. But then he thought, 'What does this sadhu have that he can throw away this valuable touchstone thinking it to be a trifle? He must have some greater wealth!' After a while, he again came back to Srila Sanatan Goswami. 'Oh, you again? How come you are here? Your problem is solved now. Why have you come again then?' 'Prabhu, I wanted to ask you something...' 'Yes, what is it?' 'I am bowing at your holy feet and begging you for a drop of that sort of wealth having got which you do not see any value in a jewel (যে ধনে হইয়া ধনী মণিরে মান না মণি তাহারি খানিক মাগি আমি নতশিরে, Rabindranath Tagore). I want that kind of wealth that you have!' 'Oh, will you take this wealth? If you are to take it, you should throw away your material attachment – throw this touchstone away.' Jivan Chakravarti threw the touchstone into the Yamuna. 'Now stretch your hands. Here, take these beads and chant the Holy Name on them. This is that wealth.' This is how Jivan Chakravarti started to live in Vrindavan and chant the Holy Name. In the meantime, his daughter was married well into a good, wealthy family; everything was settled by the mercy of the Lord. Jay Sri Sanatan Goswami Prabhu ki jay.
