(9/15) Suspicion Leads to Suspension
His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
After Narad Goswami instructed Vyasadev to compose a new, exclusive scripture, Vyasadev wondered, ‘If I write an exclusive scripture about devotion, who will preach it in this world?’ Then he remembered Sukadev, his disciple, or son (you can say both). At that time, Sukadev had been in his mother’s womb for twelve years already. You can see how incredible this pastime is. You may wonder, ‘What is the proof that Krishna is the Supreme Lord?’ You have children at home – are they born wearing clothes, tilaks and with a garland on their necks? They are not. However, when Krishna was born in Mathura, He appeared assuming a four-armed form, wearing clothes, holding a conch, club, disk and lotus flower. When Krishna’s parents, Devaki and Vasudev, offered their obeisances to Him, He became two-armed, but He remained fully clothed and decorated with ornaments. This is the difference. So, when Vyasadev remembered Sukadev, he came to the boy, who was still in his mother’s womb, and said, ‘Sukadev, come! You must come out and preach religion in this world!’ ‘No, no,’ Sukadev replied. (He could speak even though he was in his mother’s womb!) ‘I will not come out!’ ‘Why will you not come out?’ Vyasadev asked. ‘Because if I come out, Maya will catch me.’ Then, many sages, including Vyasadev’s father, Parasara Muni, came there. They advised Vyasadev, ‘You have much power, you can stop Maya’s work for five minutes.’ ‘Will you come out if I stop Maya for five minutes?’ Vyasadev asked Sukadev. ‘Yes, five minutes is enough,’ Sukadev agreed. As soon as Sukadev Goswami appeared from his mother’s womb, he ran away to the forest! We may sometimes wonder how this is possible. Our cow in Nrisingha Palli had a calf recently, and one hour after the calf was born, it was already running around. If calves can do that, then why not humans? It is necessary to have faith.
'শ্রদ্ধা' শব্দে—বিস্বাস কহে সুদৃঢ় নিশ্চয় ।
‘sraddha’-sabde visvasa kahe sudrdha nischaya ‘Sraddha is a firm, determined faith that by serving Krishna all actions are accomplished.’ (Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 2.22.62) One time, a man came to me in Nabadwip. He worked at a rice mill and worshipped Kali. He would often be seen with a sindoor mark on his forehead. I asked him once, ‘Who put this sindoor for you?’ and he explained that when he brought some bel leaves to somebody (for puja), they put a sindoor mark on him. A few days after that, something happened, and he suddenly came to me wearing huge tilak marks. He pleaded, ‘Please save me! Please save me! When I saw you, I understood that you can save me!’ One way or another, the Lord gives inspiration to people – whether it is Kali, Durga, Laksmi or Ganesh, they are all under Lord Krishna. It is said in Sri Brahma-samhita:
ঈশ্বরঃ পরমঃ কৃষ্ণঃ সচ্চিদানন্দবিগ্রহঃ ।
isvarah paramah krsnah sach-chid-ananda-vigrahah ‘Krishna, who is known as Govinda, is the supreme controller. He has an eternal, blissful, spiritual body. He is the origin of all. He has no origin, for He is the prime cause of all causes.’ (Sri Brahma-samhita, 5.1) Lord Krishna is the cause of all causes! That is why we are told that sraddha means a determined faith that by service to Krishna all actions are accomplished. Your debt to your father, mother, rishis (sages), demigods – all debts are cleared if you serve the Lord. One time, I was asked what my favourite verse from Srimad Bhagavad-gita was, and I said:
সর্ব্বধর্ম্মান্ পরিত্যজ্য মামেকং শরণং ব্রজ ।
sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja ‘Give up all religions and surrender to Me alone. I will liberate you from all sins, do not despair.’ (Srimad Bhagavad-gita, 18.66) ‘Give up all religions – the religion of serving your mother, father, friends, the religion of sudras, brahmans, ksatriyas, vaisyas, and so on. Give up all religions and surrender to Me. Do not worry, I will save you from all sins.’ It is necessary to believe this. If you have no faith, how will you understand it? You will think, ‘Oh, Sukadev was just born, how could he run?’
