(7/18) Identifying Yourself with Kirtan

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Sri Vyasa-Puja Adhivas, Tarakeswar,
Evening, 28 September 2019, part 7
Translated from Bengali

Do you have any questions so far? I started earlier and have been speaking a little fast today because I have another class at night with the foreign devotees from the United States and other places, so I will have to leave a little earlier.

So, I have been telling you a lot about the glories of Sri Gurudev today. This is guru-mahima kirtan (chanting the glories of the guru). Srila Prabhupad said that it is easy to write articles about devotion, it is easy to chant kirtan producing various tunes and reciting the words, but very few people care to think about the inner mood and the deep meaning of the kirtan. To be honest, most people do not pay attention to it. We sing kirtan our whole lives, but we do not identify ourselves with the inner mood of kirtan. For example, we sing the arati kirtans, but we do not think about the Deities. We do not think, 'Is the Lord happy or not?'

Gurudev always keeps his disciples engaged in service, but disciples sometimes think, 'It is not possible to accomplish this through me; I cannot do that.' They do not understand that they do not do anything – gurudev does everything through them...

Sravan (listening about the Lord), kirtan (chanting the Lord's glories, serving the Lord) and seva (service) are the food for the soul. Have you ever been to Gaya? There, the holy lotus feet of Lord Vishnu are worshipped. Have you seen them offer bhoga there? They offer bhoga there to the Lord's lotus feet, and how does the Lord eat it? The Lord eats it with His feet. The Lord does not only hear with His ears – He can also eat with His ears, He can eat with His nose. He does not eat only with His mouth – He can eat with His feet, hands and all other limbs. His limbs can do everything. This is what Srila Prabhupad said. I have read it when I was reading a collection of his lectures.

It is time for the arati now. Please get up, join the arati.

No Shortcuts
'If you think you can conquer illusory environment, can conquer your ego and everything else, it is not possible. These are Gurudev's words. He said it is only possible through sravanam, kirtanam—through practising. Not in any other way.'

Even if they live in another country, but they remember the festival, they will get
some sukriti through that. That is their hope.
