(10/18) Unhappy Mind

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad

Evening, 28 September 2019, part 10
Translated from Bengali

If we start thinking, 'Oh, I do not have enough money,' then when we chant the Hare Krishna maha-mantra, we will be unconsciously wishing for more money, more things... Do not be like this. 'Tomara sevaya yata haya duhkha, seo ta' parama sukha (তোমার সেবায় যত হয় দুঃখ, সেও ত' পরম সুখ). Even any unhappiness that may come in Your service is my greatest happiness' (Saranagati). Do you understand the meaning of these words? What do devotees do? To make their guru and the Lord happy, they are eager to even undergo any kind of suffering. But when we face some unhappiness while trying to serve our guru and the Lord, we run away. 'Oh, they did not give me my favourite thing at the prasadam time!', 'They look down on me!', 'Oh, I wanted to do this service, but gurudev did not give that service to me!', 'Oh, I was the manager, but they have removed me from this position!' – we become frustrated with all this and one day just leave and go to another place.

All these things are described nicely here, in Guidance 4.

What we must understand is that it is necessary to do the service according to your capacity, or right. When your guru gives you some service, you must do it with heart and soul. Whatever unhappiness comes in the course of that service, we must be happy to bear everything. But how many people like that are there, tell me? That is why I told you that you can find many gurus, but you will not find so many disciples in this world. Who is capable of accepting that kind of unhappiness in their lives? Those who can do it are called disciples. 'Come what may – no matter what unhappiness, struggles or obstacles come – all this unhappiness is my service!' How many people can understand it? That is the main question...

If you want to call yourselves disciples, you must have a relationship with your guru. I told you yesterday that the guru is the centre of the disciple's very being (prana-kendra). Gurudev's wealth is not his Maths, temples or any buildings – gurudev's wealth is faith, devotion and divine love.

Question: What is that devotion and divine love?

Divine love is a very high matter. It is paramour love. It is not just love – it is paramour love...

It is not so easy to understand the guru. It is easy to understand some small things, but gurudev is great, so it is not possible to understand him without his mercy.

When your guru gives you some service, you must accept his order and do that service. At the same time, you must not criticise or insult anybody else's service – if you do it, you will be in grave danger. Continue with your constitutional service, do not try to do anybody else's service and do not criticise anybody else's service. It is not good if you try to imitate (anukaran) anything or anybody, but it is good if you can follow (anusaran) your guru.

Sadhu-Sanga:
Primary Practice
'Life is very short, we can die any time, so we must realise now what we must do—what Srimad Bhagavatam says, what Srimad Bhagavad-gita says—and follow that.'

It is necessary to understand where the mantra and the guru come from.
