SRI GAUDIYA GITANJALI : SPECIAL POETRY
Sri Sri Narottam Prabhor Astakam
(By Srimad Visvanath Chakravarti Thakur)
sri-krsna-namamrta-varsi-vaktra-
chandra-prabha-dhasta-tamo-bharaya
gauranga-devanucharaya tasmai
namo namah srila-narottamaya [1]
I am offering my obeisances to Srila Narottam, Sri Gauranga Mahaprabhu’s
associate, whose holy mouth showers the nectar of the Holy Name of Lord Sri
Krishna, which, like the light of the moon, destroys the darkness of
ignorance.
sankirtanandaja-manda-hasya-
dantadyuti-dyotita-dinmukhaya
svedasru-dhara-snapitaya tasmai
namo namah srila-narottamaya [2]
When he smiles gently from the joy of sankirtan, the radiance of his
teeth illuminates all directions; he is bathed with the divine perspiration
and torrents of tears – I am offering obeisances to this Srila Narottam.
mrdanga-nama-sruti-matra-chanchat-
padambuja-dvandva-manoharaya
sadyah samudyat-pulakaya tasmai
namo namah srila-narottamaya [3]
As soon as he just hears the chanting of the Holy Name and the beats of the
mridanga, his beautiful, charming holy lotus feet become restless –
once he goes there, the hairs on his body immediately stand erect – I am
offering obeisances to this Srila Narottam.
gandharva-garva-ksapana-svalasya-
vismapitasesa-krti-vrajaya
svasrsta-gana-prathitaya tasmai
namo namah srila-narottamaya [4]
As he walks around manifesting his pastimes, his wondrous dance defeats the
pride of gandharvas (expert heavenly dancers); he gained wide renown
through the songs he wrote – I am offering obeisances to this Srila
Narottam.
ananda-murchchhava-nipata-bhata-
dhuli-bharalankrta-vigrahaya
yad-darsanam bhagya-bharena tasmai
namo namah srila-narottamaya [5]
When he, overcome with joy, appears to fall unconscious, his holy form
becomes adorned by particles of dust; to see this sight is the acme of one’s
fortune – I am offering obeisances to this Srila Narottam.
sthale sthale yasya krpa-prapabhih
krsnanya-trsna jana-samhatinam
nirmulita eva bhavanti tasmai
namo namah srila-narottamaya [6]
Setting up wells of mercy throughout the land, he eradicates people’s thirst
for anything else besides Krishna – I am offering obeisances to this Srila
Narottam.
yad bhakti-nisthopala-rekhikeva
sparsah punah sparsamaniva yasya
pramanyam evam srutivad yad iyam
tasmai namah srila-narottamaya [7]
His devotion is so firm that it is as if carved in a stone – once anybody
comes in touch with it, it works like a wish-fulfilling touchstone; his words
are self-evident, just like the authoritative aural scriptures – I am
offering obeisances to Srila Narottam.
murtaiva bhaktih kim ayam kim esa
vairagya-sarastanuman nrloke
sambhavyate yah krtibhih sadaiva
tasmai namah srila-narottamaya [8]
People in this world forever keep debating, ‘Is he devotion personified, or
is he the ideal embodiment of renunciation?’ I am offering obeisances to this
Srila Narottam.
sri-radhika-krsna-vilasa-sindhau
nimajjatah srila-narottamasya
pathed ya evastakam etad uchchair-
sau tadiyam padavim prayati [9]
Those who recite out loud this poem about Srila Narottam, who is immersed
into the ocean of pastimes of Sri Radhika and Sri Krishna, will attain the
same destination.
karunya-drsti-samitasrita-mantu-koti
ramyadharodyadati-sundara-danta-kanti
sriman-narottama-mukhambuja-manda-hasyam
lasyam tanotu hrdi me vitarat svadasyam [10]
When one takes shelter in him, his merciful glance destroys thousands of
transgressions and the radiance of his beautiful teeth kindles sweetest
affection – may the sweet smile on the lotus face of this Sriman Narottam
grant me devotion unto him, making my heart dance.
rajan-mrdanga-karatala-kalabhiramam
gauranga-gana-madhu-pana-bharabhiramam
sriman-narottam-padam-buja-manju-nrtyam
bhrtyam krtarthayatu mam phalitesta-krtyam [11]
Sriman Narottam’s charming holy lotus feet are dancing, thrilled at the
sounds of the mridanga (the king of instruments) and karatals,
delighting in drinking the nectar of Lord Gauranga’s divine qualities. May he
be pleased with this servant and grant me my cherished wish.
