Sri Kunja-Bihari Stava Astakam

Obeisances to Sri Krishna, who enjoys His pastimes in the groves of Vrindavan.

indranila-mani-manjula-varnah,
phulla-nipa-kusumanchita-karnah
krsnalabhir akrsorasi-hari,
sundaro jayati kunja-bihari [1]

Glory to the beautiful Lord Sri Kunja-Bihari Krishna, who enjoys His pastimes in the groves of Vrindavan! His beautiful figure is the colour of a blue sapphire. He tucks fully bloomed kadamba flowers behind His ear and wears a necklace of gunja beads on His broad chest.

radhika-vadana-chandra-chakorah,
sarva-vallava-vadhu-dhrti-chaurah
charchchari-chaturatanchita-chari-
charuto jayati kunja-bihari [2]

Glory to Sri Kunja-Bihari Krishna! He is the chakora bird subsisting on drinking the moonbeams of Sri Radhika’s holy face. He robs all cowherd men’s young wives of their composure. He dances and sings in a very expert and lovely way.

sarvatah prathita-kaulika-parva-
dhvamsanena hrta-vasava-garvah
gostha-raksana-krte giridhari,
lilaya jayati kunja-bihari [3]

Glory to Sri Kunja-Bihari Krishna! Having broken a traditional sacrificial ritual, He removed Lord Indra’s pride and protected His villagers by holding up Giriraj Govardhan.

raga-mandala-vibhusita-vamsi-
vibhramena madanotsava-samsi
stuyamana-charitah suka-sari-
srenibhir jayati kunja-bihari [4]

Glory to Sri Kunja-Bihari Krishna! He incites amorous joy with His unsettling flute, which is embellished with transcendental passion and extolled by the parrots Suka and Sari.

satakumbha-ruchi-hari-dukulah
keki-chandraka-virajita-chulah
navya-yauvana-lasad-vraja-nari-
ranjano jayati kunja-bihari [5]

Glory to Sri Kunja-Bihari Krishna! Clad in enchanting, beautiful clothes of golden colour, with the ‘eye’ of a peacock feather tucked in His hair, He is the delight of all effulgent youthful girls in Vraja.

sthasaki-krta-sugandhi-patirah
svarna-kanchi-parisobhi-katirah
radhikonnata-payodhara-vari-
kunjaro jayati kunja-bihari [6]

Glory to Sri Kunja-Bihari Krishna! His torso is smeared with fragrant oils. He wears a beautiful golden belt around His waist. Like a tied elephant, He is tethered to Radhika’s raised breasts.

gaura-dhatu-tilakojjvala-bhalah
keli-chanchalita-champaka-malah
adri-kandara-grhe-svabhisari,
subhruvam jayati kunja-bihari [7]

Glory to Sri Kunja-Bihari Krishna! His forehead is embellished with beautiful eyebrows and an effulgent yellow-clay tilak mark. A garland of champaka flowers swings happily on His neck. He comes to meet His girlfriends in mountain caves.

vibhramochchala-drganchala-nrtya-
ksipta-gopa-lalana-khila-krtyah
prema-matta-vrsabhanu-kumari-
nagaro jayati kunja-bihari [8]

Glory to Sri Kunja-Bihari Krishna! His flustering sidelong glances and dancing leaves the distracted wives of cowherds powerless. Madly in love, He enjoys amorous pastimes with the youthful daughter of King Vrisabhanu.

astakam madhura-kunja-bihari-
kridaya pathati yah kila hari
sa prayati vilasat-para-bhagam
tasya pada kamalarchchana-ragam [9]

Those who study and recite this poem describing the nectarean pastimes of Sri Kunja-Bihari Krishna will certainly attain the great effulgent fortune of loving attachment to His holy lotus feet.
