SRI GAUDIYA GITANJALI : SPECIAL POETRY
Srila-Gopal-Bhatta-Gosvami-Prabhur Sochaka
(Lament for Srila Gopal Bhatta Goswami Prabhu)
sri-gopala bhatta prabhu, tuya sri-charana kabhu,
dekhiba ki nayana bhariya
suniya asima guna, panjare bindhila ghuna,
nichhani niya yaire mariya [1]
O Sri Gopal Bhatta Prabhu, will I ever get to see your holy lotus feet to my
eyes’ content? When I heard about his inexhaustible glories, a termite bored
a hole in my cage. May all inauspiciousness go far away now!
pirite gadala tanu, dasavana hema janu,
chanda mukha aruna adhara
jhalake dasana-kanti, jini mukutara panti,
hasi kahe amrta-madhura [2]
His body is built of love, ten times purer than unalloyed gold. He has a
moon-like face and beautiful crimson lips. His glowing teeth defeat the
beauty of a row of pearls, and the sound of his laughter is as sweet as
nectar.
paranera parana yara, rupa-sanatana ara,
raghunatha yugala jivana
pandita krsna, lokanatha, jane deha-bheda-matra,
saravasva sri-radha-ramana [3]
Rupa and Sanatan are the very vitality of his life, and the two Raghunaths
(Raghunath Bhatta and Raghunath Das) are his soul. He is one with Krishna Das
Kaviraj and Lokanath (the only difference between them is that they are in
different bodies). Sri Radha-Raman is his all-in-all.
premete vithara anga, chaitanya-charana-bhrnga,
srinivase dayara adhina
sabe meli’ rasasvada, bhava-bhare unmada,
ei vyavasaya chira-dina [4]
Divine love makes his holy body go limp. A bumblebee at Lord Chaitanya’s holy
feet, he is overpowered by Srinivas’s mercy. All together they relish the
nectar of devotional ecstasy, becoming mad as divine sentiments swell within
them. This is how they spend their whole lives.
lila-sudha-suradhuni, rasika-mukuta-mani,
rasavese gadgada hiya
aho aho raga-sindhu, aho dina-jana-bandhu,
yasa gaya jagata bhariya [5]
He is a jewel in the crown of those who relish the pure Ganges flow of the
Lord’s pastimes. His heart quivers from devotional feelings. O ocean of
loving attachment! O friend of the poor! The whole world is singing your
glories.
ha ha murti sumadhura, ha ha karunara pura,
ha ha chinta-mani-guna-khani
ha ha prabhu eka-bara, dekhao madhuri-sara,
sri-charana-kamala-lavani [6]
O embodiment of sweetness and grace! O merciful Lord! O mine of all good
qualities, wish-fulfilling gems! O Lord! Please just once show me what
sweetness is – show me your beautiful, charming holy lotus feet.
aneka janmera pare, asesa bhagyera tare,
tuya parikara pada-paye
nija karamera dose, majinu visaya-rase,
janama goyanu khali khaye [7]
Finally, after many births, by some fortune, I have come to the holy feet of
your associates. But because of my own past actions, I remain submerged in
material attachments – I have passed my whole life eating oilcakes (the
refuse left after extracting all substance).
aparadho pade mane, tathapi tomara gune,
patita-pavana asa-bandha
lobhete chanchala-mati, upekhile nahi gati,
phukarai manohara manda [8]
My mind is full of offences, but my hope lies in the fact that it is your
nature to rescue the fallen. Because of greed, I am very fickle-minded, so if
you ignore me, I will be hopeless. This wretched Manohar is crying out to
you.
