Dasavidha Namaparadha
(Ten Offences of the Holy Name)

hari-nama maha-mantra sarva-mantra-sara
yandera karuna-bale jagate prachara
sei nama-parayana sadhu, mahajana
tanhadera ninda na kariha kadachana [1]

(1) Never criticise sadhus and great souls who are devoted to chanting the Holy Name and by whose mercy the Hare Krishna maha-mantra, the best of all mantras, is distributed throughout the world.

vrajendra-nandana krsna sarvesvaresvara
mahesvara adi tanra sevana-tatpara
nama chintamani krsna-chaitanya-svarupa
bheda-jnana na karibe lila-guna-rupa [2]

(2) Vrajendra-nandan Krishna is the Lord of all Lords – Lord Siva and all other gods always eagerly serve Him. A wish-fulfilling jewel, the Holy Name is the original form of Lord Krishna – do not think that there is any distinction between His Name and His pastimes, qualities or beauty.

“guru krsna-rupa hana sastrera pramane
guru-rupe krsna krpa kare bhagyavane”
se gurute martya-buddhi avajnadi tyaji
ista-labha kara, nirantara nama bhaji [3]

(3) ‘Scriptures confirm that the guru is non-different from Krishna, who appears as a guru to bestow His mercy upon fortunate souls.’ Giving up all irreverent ideas about the guru (that he is a mortal man, etc.), attain your aspiration and incessantly worship the Holy Name.

sruti, sruti-mata-saha satvata purana
sri-nama-charana-padma kare nirajana
sei sruti-sastra yeba karaye nindana
se aparadhira sanga karibe varjana [4]

(4) Revealed scriptures, their mother (the gayatri) and the sattvik Puranas, offer worship (arati) at the Holy Name’s lotus feet. Reject the association of the offenders who criticise such revealed scriptures.

namera mahima sarva-sastrete vakhane
ati-stuti, hena kabhu na bhaviha mane
agastya, ananta, brahma, sivadi satata
ye nama-mahima-gatha sankirtana-rata
se nama-mahima-sindhu ke paibe para?
ati-stuti bale yei—sei durachara [5]

(5) The glory of the Name is proclaimed in all scriptures. Never even think that such praise is excessive or unreasonable. When Agastya, Ananta, Brahma, Siva, and others are constantly engaged in the sankirtan, chanting the glories of the Name, who can then cross this ocean of the glories of the Name? Those who say that it is excessive or unreasonable are wretched.

krsna-namavali nitya golokera dhana
kalpita, prakrta bhave—aparadhi-jana [6]

(6) Krishna’s Names are eternal wealth of Goloka. Anyone who considers Them imaginary or mundane is an offender.

name sarva-papa-ksaya sarva-sastre kaya
sara-dina papa kari sei bharasaya—
emata durbuddhi yara sei aparadhi
maya-pravanchita, duhkha bhunje niravadhi [7]

(7) All the scriptures declare that the Name destroys all sins. The wicked and foolish who sin all day long in view of that are offenders. They are deluded by Maya and suffer from endless sorrows.

atulya sri-krsna-nama purna-rasa-nidhi
tanra sama na bhaviha subha-karma adi [8]

(8) The incomparable Name of Sri Krishna is an ocean of ecstasy. Do not consider His Names to be equal to any pious actions, religious rites or any other practices.

name sraddha-hina-jana—vidhata-vanchita
tare nama dane aparadha sunischita [9]

(9) Giving the Name to those who are deceived by Providence and have no faith in the Name is definitely an offence.

suniyao krsna-nama-mahatmya apara
ye priti-rahita, sei naradhama chhara
ahamta mamata yara antare bahire
suddha krsna-nama tara kabhu nahi sphure [10]

(10) Those who have heard about the boundless glories of Krishna’s Name but still have no love for this Name are wretched, worthless souls. Krishna’s pure Name will never manifest to those who, within and without, only think in terms of ‘I’ and ‘mine’.

ei dasa aparadha kariya varjana
ye sujana kare hari-nama sankirtana
apurva sri-krsna-prema labhya tara haya
nama-prabhu tanra hrde nitya vilasaya [11]

The great souls who avoid these ten offences and engage in Harinam-sankirtan attain unprecedented divine love for Lord Sri Krishna, and the Name Himself forever sports within their hearts.
