SRI GAUDIYA GITANJALI : SRI ARATI GITI Sri Guru Prasastih (By Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj)
sri-gaura-mandala-majhe hapaniya grama In Sri Gaura Mandal, there is a village called Hapaniya where my Lord, an abode of all good qualities, appeared.
patita-pavani ganga-tira sannihita It stands on the bank of the Ganges, who is very merciful to fallen souls; renowned in the whole world, this abode is a holy repository of knowledge and jewels of logic.
tenhi vaise vipra-bara prasanta udara In this place resided an honourable brahman of a very peaceful and magnanimous nature whose name was Sri Upendra-chandra Vidyaratna.
bhattacharya-kula-ravi parama vidvana Highly learned, he is the sun of the renowned Bhattacharya family line, always engaged in service of Sri Laksmi-Narayan.
tanra patni gauri-devi parama pavani His spouse, Sri Gauri Devi – a supreme saviour, a great saint and the mother of the whole universe – is the mother of my Lord.
atharasa satera sake saurasvina masa He appeared on a Saturday, on the 26th day of the Ashvin month in 1817 of the Saka Era [Saturday, 10 October 1895].
budhaditya-jiva-yoge tunga-graha-gane He appeared on the day of the auspicious conjunction of Sun and Mercury, Moon and Jupiter, under the same sign as Lord Ramachandra and on the same day as Sri Virachandra Prabhu.
subhankari pusya anke kartiki navami My Lord appeared on the navami-tithi (ninth day) of the Kartik month when the stars aligned in the most auspicious position of the pusya naksatra. Kissed by the lotus feet of my Lord, the earth felt blessed.
uthila ananda-rola acharya-bhavane There arouse a tumultuous joyful vibration at the house of my guru as the ladies blew the conchshells, rang the bells and made auspicious jubilant cries.
ajanulambita bhuja purata-sundara He possessed a beautiful golden figure, and his long arms reached his knees. As he was lying on the lap of his mother, his auspicious divine lustre looked extremely charming.
heriya putrera rupa mugdha pita-mata The boy’s beauty charmed his parents and all chaste ladies.
ramachandra-janma-ksana smari viprabara Remembering that the boy appeared at the same moment as Lord Ramachandra, his brahman father named him Ramendra-sundar.
apurva balaka-sobha vyapila bhuvane Impeccable in his behaviour, Ramendra-chandra grew day by day, and his unprecedented beauty spread around the whole world.
dekhite dekhite prabhu labhiya yauvana My Lord grew up, and as a youth, he soon became greatly enriched as he started studying.
divya subimala tanu maha-jyotir-maya Seeing his divine, extremely pure and graceful figure, adorned with powerful lustre, everybody was startled and reverent towards him.
vairagya-bhavita bhakti-purna kalevara His figure, full of devotion, became immersed in renunciation, resembling a great pond covered with moss.
maha-jnani suka praya virakta pradhana He became a great scholar and showed indifference to the world, similar to that of Sukadev Goswami. Seeing that, his parents always worried about his future.
sannyasi haibe putra na rahibe ghare They understood that their son would one day become a sannyasi and that nothing could keep him at home – they saw the symptoms of a great yogi and a great renunciate in his figure.
antare ananda, bahye duhkha parakasa Thus, feeling internally very happy, but externally showing sadness, the brahman (Sri Upendra-chandra) left the world and entered the holy abode of Vaikuntha.
krame krame prabhu mora apana prakasi Eventually, my Lord revealed himself: out of his own free will, he cut off all ties with the world and became a sannyasi.
grha-tyagi mayapura karila vijaya Leaving his home, he arrived in Mayapur, the land of Sri Gauranga’s appearance, full of cognisance and bliss.
sri-bhakti-siddhanta sarasvati prabhu-sthane He took sannyas from Sri Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur Prabhupad in order to save poor souls.
sri-bhakti-raksaka sankirtana-murti-dhara His guru named him Sridhar, indicating that he is the protector of holy devotion (sri-bhakti-raksaka) and the personification (murti-dhara) of sankirtan, congregational chanting of the Lord’s Holy Names.
patita-pavana-rupe tridandira vese Garbed into a mendicant’s dress, he travelled the length and breadth of the country as a savour of the fallen, distributing ecstatic love for the Holy Name.
dina hina papi-tapi sabare uddhari Just like Sri Gaura-hari, he rescued everyone – all kinds of lowly, poor and fallen sinners – showering nectar all over the universe.
jaya jaya patita-pavana prabhu-bara Glory, glory to you, my greatest Master, the rescuer of fallen souls, a crest-jewel among renunciates – glory to Sri Bhakti Raksak!
asankhya pranati tava pada-padme mora I am offering countless obeisances at your holy lotus feet. Please destroy the terrible material bondage I am entangled in.
bhavarnave pade sudha habudubu khai Having fallen into this material ocean, I flounder helplessly, struggling to stay afloat. Please rescue this wretch – give me some place at your feet.
vandi avirbhava-tithi sri-krsna-navami My obeisance to Sri Krishna Navami, your appearance day, the day on which this world was blessed to receive a kiss of your lotus feet.
vandi hapaniya grama maha-tirtha-maya My obeisance to Sri Hapaniya village, a grand place of pilgrimage. My obeisance to the unlimitedly merciful Sri Upendra-chandra.
vandi nitya bhattacharya-kulabja-bhaskara I offer my eternal obeisances to the effulgent sun of the family of Sri Upendra-chandra Bhattacharya. I offer my obeisance to his expert son, Sri Ramendra-sundar.
sabadhane vandi mui gauri-devi mata With great care I bow down to his mother Sri Gauri Devi, on whose lap my Lord appeared and whose lap he thus illuminated.
prabhura sambandha-dhari yateka sujana I very joyfully offer obeisances and prayers to all those who have any connection with my Lord.
sabe krpa kari more kara asirvada May you all kindly bestow your blessings upon me so that I may receive the mercy of my Lord without any obstacles.
